SAQA US 110457 | NQF 4 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to grind, polish, and restore marble, terrazzo, concrete, and stone floors using diamond discs. Participants will understand the selection, application, and maintenance of diamond tooling to achieve high-quality finishes in commercial and residential settings.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate the correct selection and mounting of diamond discs for different stone types and conditions.
  • Apply safe working practices and use personal protective equipment during grinding and polishing operations.
  • Operate floor grinding and polishing machinery effectively to achieve specified finish levels.
  • Evaluate floor surface conditions and determine the appropriate sequence of diamond grits.
  • Implement quality control checks to ensure the final finish meets industry standards.
  • Analyze common defects such as scratches or uneven gloss and apply corrective techniques.

Target Audience

This course is designed for floor technicians, construction workers, maintenance staff, and individuals seeking to enter the floor grinding and polishing industry.

• Certification requirements and assessment preparation

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop proficiency in operating grinding and polishing equipment, selecting diamond discs, and achieving professional finishes. These supervised exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and build confidence in real-world scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Equipment Setup and Basic Grinding — Learners set up floor grinders and handheld tools, then perform coarse and medium grinding on concrete and marble samples. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Polishing Sequence and Finish Control — Learners apply a full polishing sequence from medium to ultra-fine grits on marble and terrazzo samples, achieving specified gloss levels. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Terrazzo and Concrete Specialized Techniques — Learners grind and polish terrazzo to expose aggregates evenly, and apply densifiers and sealers on concrete samples. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Project Simulation and Quality Assurance — Learners plan and execute a complete grinding and polishing project on a designated area, followed by final inspection and quality checks. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
