Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to select appropriate rope access equipment and rig ropes safely and effectively. It covers equipment inspection, selection criteria, and rigging techniques compliant with South African standards and international best practices. By the end, learners will be able to set up and manage rope access systems for industrial projects.

Course Outline

Day 1: Rope Access Equipment Fundamentals and Standards

Objectives:
• Identify and describe the main categories of rope access equipment.
• Explain the relevant SANS/EN/ISO standards and SAQA requirements.
• Differentiate between equipment for work positioning, fall arrest, and rescue.
• Demonstrate correct pre-use inspection of basic personal protective equipment (PPE).

Topics:
• Introduction to rope access and regulatory framework (OHS Act, SANS 100190).
• Types of ropes: static, semi-static, and dynamic – construction, characteristics, and uses.
• Harnesses: full-body, sit, and chest harnesses – selection criteria and fitting.
• Connectors: carabiners, maillons, and quick-links – grades, markings, and inspection.
• Descenders and ascenders: types, applications, and compatibility.
• Fall arrest systems: lanyards, shock absorbers, and energy absorbers.
• Equipment marking, traceability, and lifespan management.
• Pre-use inspection procedures and record-keeping.

Day 2: Rigging Principles and Equipment Selection

Objectives:
• Apply load calculations and safety factors for rope access rigging.
• Select appropriate anchor systems and rigging configurations.
• Evaluate equipment compatibility and system integrity.
• Identify common rigging errors and mitigation strategies.

Topics:
• Rigging physics: load angles, vector forces, and safety margins.
• Anchor systems: natural, structural, and artificial anchors – strengths and limitations.
• Rigging configurations: Y-hang, re-anchor, load-sharing, and redirects.
• Equipment selection matrices: matching equipment to task, environment, and load.
• Edge protection: types, installation, and inspection.
• Rope management: storage, coiling, and protection from environmental damage.
• Common rigging mistakes: cross-loading, improper knot selection, and incorrect attachments.
• Documentation and risk assessment for rigging plans.

Day 3: Advanced Rigging, Rescue Systems, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Design and set up complex rigging systems for multi-point anchors.
• Select and configure equipment for rescue and emergency scenarios.
• Conduct a full equipment audit and prepare a rigging plan.
• Integrate knowledge into a simulated worksite practical exercise.

Topics:
• Advanced anchor systems: tensioned lines, highline, and rope-grab systems.
• Rescue equipment selection: stretchers, pulleys, and mechanical advantage systems.
• Hauling and lowering systems: efficiency, friction, and control.
• Equipment compatibility for rescue vs. work positioning.
• Inspection and retirement criteria for used equipment.
• Developing a site-specific equipment selection and rigging plan.
• Emergency procedures: dealing with damaged equipment and system failure.
• Review of case studies: rigging failures and best practices.

Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for developing competence in equipment inspection, selection, and rigging. Learners practice pre-use checks, set up various anchor systems, and simulate rescue rigging under supervision, ensuring they can apply theoretical knowledge safely in real-world scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • Equipment Inspection and PPE Fitting — Learners conduct detailed pre-use inspections of ropes, harnesses, connectors, and fall arrest devices, then correctly fit and adjust full-body harnesses. (3h)
  • Anchor System Rigging — Learners set up natural and structural anchors, construct Y-hang and load-sharing systems, and apply edge protection, verifying load calculations and system integrity. (4h)
  • Rescue System Rigging and Equipment Selection — Learners select and rig a mechanical advantage system for raising and lowering a load, and configure a basic rescue setup including stretcher attachment. (3h)
  • Integrated Worksite Simulation — Teams develop a rigging plan for a simulated worksite, select all necessary equipment, set up the system, and perform a mock rescue, followed by a debrief. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
