Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic numeracy and literacy skills are recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Net Plans and Terminology

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of net plans in commercial fishing.
• Identify key components of a net plan, including dimensions, mesh size, and twine specifications.
• Interpret symbols, abbreviations, and scaling used in net plans.
• Recognize different types of fishing nets and their applications.

• Overview of commercial fishing net construction.
• Reading and interpreting net plans: scale, dimensions, and annotations.
• Key terminology: mesh size, twine diameter, hanging ratio, selvedge.
• Types of nets: gill nets, trawl nets, seine nets, and lift nets.

Day 2: Materials and Tools for Net Construction

Objectives:
• Select appropriate netting materials based on target species and conditions.
• Identify tools required for net construction: needles, gauges, twine cutters.
• Understand properties of different twine materials: nylon, polyethylene, polyester.
• Calculate twine consumption from net plans.

Topics:
• Netting materials: types, strengths, and durability.
• Twine selection: diameter, breaking strength, and knot efficiency.
• Tools of the trade: netting needles, mesh gauges, and cutting tools.
• Estimating material requirements from net plans.

Day 3: Basic Netting Techniques – Knots and Mesh Forming

Objectives:
• Tie essential knots used in net construction: sheet bend, clove hitch, weaver’s knot.
• Form mesh by hand using a netting needle and gauge.
• Demonstrate consistent mesh size and tension.
• Repair damaged mesh sections.

• Knots for netting: sheet bend, double sheet bend, clove hitch.
• Hand netting technique: using needle and gauge.
• Creating uniform mesh: maintaining tension and spacing.
• Basic repair techniques for torn netting.

Day 4: Net Shaping and Panel Construction

Objectives:
• Cut and shape netting panels according to plan specifications.
• Join panels using lacing and seaming techniques.
• Calculate and apply tapers and cuts for net shape.
• Assemble a simple net panel from a plan.

Topics:
• Cutting netting: straight cuts, tapers, and shaping.
• Joining panels: lacing, seaming, and knotless methods.
• Tapers and cuts: reducing or increasing mesh count.
• Practical exercise: constructing a rectangular panel.

Day 5: Hanging and Rigging Nets

Objectives:
• Understand hanging ratio and its effect on net performance.
• Attach netting to headrope, footrope, and side lines.
• Install floats, weights, and other rigging components.
• Balance buoyancy and sinking forces for proper net geometry.

Topics:
• Hanging ratio: calculation and application.
• Attaching netting to ropes: hanging twine and spacing.
• Rigging components: floats, weights, rings, and bridles.
• Achieving correct net spread and shape.

Day 6: Specialized Net Types – Trawl Nets

Objectives:
• Identify components of a trawl net: wings, belly, codend.
• Construct a small-scale trawl net from a plan.
• Attach trawl doors and sweeps correctly.
• Understand net geometry for bottom and midwater trawling.

Topics:
• Trawl net design: parts and terminology.
• Cutting and assembling trawl net panels.
• Trawl door attachment and rigging.
• Adjustments for bottom vs. midwater trawling.

Day 7: Specialized Net Types – Gill Nets and Seine Nets

Objectives:
• Construct a gill net with correct mesh size and hanging.
• Assemble a purse seine net with appropriate float and weight distribution.
• Understand the principles of entanglement and encirclement.
• Identify common faults in gill and seine nets.

Topics:
• Gill net construction: mesh size, hanging ratio, and material.
• Purse seine net: design, ring attachment, and brailing.
• Float and weight placement for different net types.
• Troubleshooting: common construction errors.

Day 8: Net Inspection, Maintenance, and Repair

Objectives:
• Inspect nets for wear, damage, and fatigue.
• Perform field repairs using needles and twine.
• Apply protective treatments to extend net life.
• Document maintenance procedures and schedules.

Topics:
• Inspection techniques: visual and tactile checks.
• Repair methods: patching, re-meshing, and reinforcement.
• Protective coatings and storage practices.
• Record keeping for net maintenance.

Day 9: Quality Assurance and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Evaluate completed nets against plan specifications.
• Perform quality checks on mesh size, hanging ratio, and rigging.
• Complete a final practical assessment building a net from a plan.
• Understand regulatory standards for commercial fishing nets.

• Quality assurance criteria: dimensions, strength, symmetry.

Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to hands-on net construction. Learners will progress from basic knot tying and mesh forming to building complete nets from plans, ensuring competence in commercial fishing net construction.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Knot Tying and Mesh Forming — Learners practice essential knots and form mesh by hand using needles and gauges, achieving consistent mesh size. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Panel Construction and Joining — Learners cut and shape netting panels from a plan, then join them using lacing and seaming techniques. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Hanging and Rigging a Net — Learners hang netting onto ropes and install floats, weights, and rigging components to achieve correct net geometry. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Building a Trawl Net or Gill Net — Learners construct either a small trawl net or gill net from a plan, incorporating all previous skills. (6h)
  • Practical 5: Final Assessment – Net Construction Project — Learners independently construct a net from a provided plan, demonstrating all competencies required for certification. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
