Target Audience

This course is designed for trade compliance officers, risk managers, logistics managers, and senior executives involved in international trade operations who are responsible for developing and overseeing risk management frameworks.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of international trade operations and business management is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to International Trade and Risk Management

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of international trade in the South African economy
• Identify key risks associated with cross-border transactions
• Recognise the regulatory framework governing international trade
• Define risk management and its role in trade compliance
• Outline the structure of the course and expected outcomes

• Overview of international trade: benefits, challenges, and trends
• Types of risks in international trade: financial, operational, legal, and reputational
• South African trade regulatory bodies: SARS, ITAC, and the DTI
• Key legislation: Customs and Excise Act, International Trade Administration Act
• Introduction to risk management principles: identification, assessment, mitigation
• The role of risk management policies in trade compliance
• Case study: common trade risk scenarios

Day 2: Risk Identification and Assessment in Trade

Objectives:
• Apply risk identification techniques specific to international trade
• Conduct a risk assessment using qualitative and quantitative methods
• Understand the risk appetite and tolerance of an organisation
• Prioritise risks based on likelihood and impact
• Document risks in a risk register

Topics:
• Risk identification tools: checklists, SWOT analysis, and scenario analysis
• Risk assessment methodologies: likelihood-consequence matrix
• Financial risks: currency fluctuations, payment defaults, and credit risks
• Operational risks: supply chain disruptions, logistics failures, and fraud
• Compliance risks: tariff classification errors, sanctions, and anti-dumping duties
• Developing a risk register: components and best practices
• Group exercise: risk identification and assessment for a sample trade transaction

Day 3: Risk Mitigation Strategies and Controls

Objectives:
• Design risk mitigation strategies for identified trade risks
• Understand internal controls and their implementation
• Evaluate insurance, hedging, and contractual safeguards
• Develop contingency plans for high-impact risks
• Apply the principle of proportionality in risk treatment

• Risk mitigation options: avoidance, reduction, transfer, and acceptance
• Internal controls: segregation of duties, authorisation limits, and reconciliations
• Financial risk mitigation: letters of credit, hedging, and export credit insurance
• Contractual safeguards: force majeure, arbitration clauses, and Incoterms
• Compliance controls: automated screening, audit trails, and due diligence
• Business continuity and contingency planning
• Workshop: designing a risk mitigation plan for a trade scenario

Day 4: Developing and Implementing Trade Risk Policies

Objectives:
• Draft a comprehensive risk management policy for international trade
• Align policy with organisational objectives and regulatory requirements
• Establish roles and responsibilities for policy implementation
• Create procedures for monitoring and reviewing risks
• Communicate policy effectively to stakeholders

• Components of a risk management policy: scope, principles, and framework
• Policy alignment with ISO 31000 and COSO ERM standards
• Defining risk appetite and tolerance levels in policy
• Roles: risk owner, risk committee, and internal audit
• Monitoring and reporting: key risk indicators (KRIs) and dashboards
• Policy review cycle and continuous improvement
• Group activity: drafting a policy section for a given trade risk

Day 5: Integration, Review, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Integrate risk management policies into daily trade operations
• Evaluate the effectiveness of risk management through audits
• Apply knowledge to a comprehensive case study
• Prepare for the unit standard assessment
• Reflect on personal learning and professional application

Topics:
• Embedding risk management into trade processes: SOPs and checklists
• Internal audit and compliance reviews: techniques and reporting
• Case study: multi-risk scenario requiring policy application
• Assessment preparation: review of key concepts and sample questions
• Final Q&A and discussion on implementation challenges
• Course evaluation and certificate requirements

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
