Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Steam Locomotive Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the historical significance and basic principles of steam locomotives.
• Identify major components and their functions.
• Explain the thermodynamic cycle of a steam engine.
• Recognize safety protocols in the locomotive environment.

• History of steam locomotives in South Africa
• Basic thermodynamics: heat, steam, and pressure
• Overview of locomotive types and configurations
• Main components: boiler, firebox, cylinders, wheels
• Safety introduction: personal protective equipment and hazards
• Introduction to operational terminology
• Steam locomotive vs. diesel/electric
• Overview of course structure and assessment

Day 2: Boiler Construction and Water Management

Objectives:
• Describe boiler construction, materials, and fittings.
• Explain water treatment and management for steam generation.
• Identify boiler gauges and safety valves.
• Understand water level control and blowdown procedures.

• Boiler types: fire-tube and water-tube
• Boiler fittings: safety valves, water gauges, injectors
• Water treatment: scale prevention and chemicals
• Feedwater systems and preheating
• Blowdown procedures and frequency
• Boiler inspections and testing
• Steam pressure and temperature relationships
• Common boiler issues and troubleshooting

Day 3: Firebox, Fuel, and Combustion

Objectives:
• Explain combustion principles and fuel types.
• Describe firebox design and air management.
• Understand firing techniques for efficient steam generation.
• Identify combustion by-products and emissions.

• Fuel types: coal, wood, oil (characteristics)
• Firebox design: grates, ashpan, brick arch
• Combustion air: primary and secondary
• Firing techniques: spreading, stoking, and maintaining fire
• Draft and exhaust steam injector
• Smoke and emission control
• Heat transfer to boiler tubes
• Fuel consumption and efficiency calculations

Day 4: Steam Distribution and Cylinder Operation

Objectives:
• Trace steam flow from boiler to cylinders.
• Explain valve gear function and types.
• Describe cylinder operation and power transmission.
• Understand reversing and cutoff mechanisms.

• Steam circuit: dome, throttle, dry pipe, superheater
• Valve gear types: Stephenson, Walschaerts, Baker
• Piston and cylinder mechanics
• Steam admission and exhaust events
• Reversing gear and cutoff adjustment
• Cylinder lubrication and drains

• Common valve gear issues

Day 5: Lubrication, Bearings, and Running Gear

Objectives:
• Identify lubrication points and lubricants used.
• Explain bearing types and maintenance.
• Describe running gear components and their functions.
• Understand wheel arrangements and axle loads.

• Lubrication systems: mechanical lubricators, grease nipples
• Bearing types: plain, roller, and thrust
• Running gear: frames, springs, equalizers
• Wheels, axles, and journal boxes
• Wheel arrangements: Whyte notation
• Brake gear and rigging
• Couplers and drawgear
• Inspection and maintenance schedules

Day 6: Brake Systems and Safety Appliances

Objectives:
• Explain air brake and steam brake principles.
• Describe safety appliances: whistles, bells, gauges.
• Understand emergency procedures and fail-safe systems.
• Identify regulatory requirements for locomotives.

• Westinghouse air brake system
• Steam brake operation
• Hand brake and parking brake

Day 7: Pre-Start Checks and Lighting Up Procedures

Objectives:
• Perform systematic pre-start inspection.
• Execute lighting up and raising steam procedures.
• Monitor boiler pressure and water level during startup.
• Document pre-departure checks.

• Pre-start checklist: boiler, running gear, brakes

Day 8: Driving Techniques and Controls

• Operate locomotive controls: throttle, reverser, brake.
• Apply smooth acceleration and deceleration techniques.
• Manage steam pressure and water level underway.
• Respond to track conditions and signals.

• Throttle handling: notching and slipping
• Reverser and cutoff adjustment for efficiency

Day 9: Shunting, Coupling, and Train Handling

Objectives:
• Perform shunting moves safely.
• Couple and uncouple rolling stock.
• Handle trains with varying loads and lengths.
• Understand marshalling and brake continuity tests.

• Coupling: knuckle, link-and-pin, automatic
• Brake pipe continuity test
• Marshalling and train make-up
• Handling light engines vs. heavy trains
• Switching in yards

Day 10: Troubleshooting and Emergencies

Objectives:
• Diagnose common mechanical and operational faults.
• Respond to emergencies: boiler low water, hot bearings, broken couplings.
• Implement emergency stop and evacuation procedures.
• Perform minor running repairs.

• Fault diagnosis: loss of power, steam leaks, brake issues

Day 11: Final Assessment and Integration

• Apply troubleshooting skills in simulated scenarios.
• Complete written and practical assessments.

Overview

Hands-on practicals are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a controlled environment. Learners will perform pre-start inspections, light up and raise steam, drive the locomotive, and handle emergencies under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Start Inspection and Lighting Up — Learners conduct a full pre-start inspection of a stationary locomotive, then perform lighting up and raising steam procedures under supervision. (8h)
  • Driving and Train Handling — Learners operate the locomotive on a designated track, practicing acceleration, braking, gradient handling, and coupling/uncoupling of rolling stock. (12h)
  • Troubleshooting and Emergency Procedures — Learners respond to simulated faults and emergencies, including low water, hot bearings, and brake failures, and perform minor running repairs. (8h)
  • Final Practical Assessment — Learners demonstrate all skills in a comprehensive practical exam, including pre-start, driving, shunting, and emergency response. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
