This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to manage safety and security within a distribution centre environment. It covers risk assessment, security protocols, emergency response, and compliance with South African occupational health and safety legislation.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Distribution Centre Safety and Security

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of safety and security in a distribution centre environment.
• Identify key legislation and standards governing safety and security in South Africa.
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of personnel in maintaining safety and security.
• Define key terms related to distribution centre safety and security management.

• Overview of distribution centre operations
• Legal framework: OHS Act, SANS 3000-1, and relevant regulations
• Roles and responsibilities of management, supervisors, and employees
• Fundamental safety and security terminology
• Introduction to risk assessment principles

Day 2: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Identify common hazards in a distribution centre.
• Conduct a basic risk assessment using appropriate methods.
• Apply the hierarchy of controls to mitigate risks.
• Document risk findings and recommend corrective actions.

Topics:
• Types of hazards: physical, chemical, ergonomic, biological
• Risk assessment methodologies (e.g., HIRA)
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE
• Practical exercise: walk-through hazard identification
• Reporting and recording hazards

Day 3: Safety Systems and Emergency Preparedness

Objectives:
• Describe safety systems used in distribution centres (e.g., fire suppression, alarms).
• Develop emergency response plans for fires, spills, and other incidents.
• Conduct emergency drills and evaluate responses.
• Understand the role of first aid and emergency equipment.

Day 4: Security Management Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Identify security risks specific to distribution centres.

• Develop security policies for personnel, visitors, and contractors.
• Understand the importance of asset protection and theft prevention.

Day 5: Health, Hygiene, and Housekeeping

Objectives:
• Apply good housekeeping practices to reduce risks.
• Understand occupational health hazards and control measures.
• Promote personal hygiene and sanitation in the workplace.
• Implement waste management procedures.

• 5S methodology for housekeeping
• Housekeeping inspections and checklists
• Occupational health hazards: noise, dust, fumes
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) selection and use
• Waste disposal and recycling
• Hygiene facilities and sanitation

Day 6: Material Handling and Equipment Safety

Objectives:
• Identify safe operating procedures for material handling equipment (MHE).
• Apply safe lifting techniques and ergonomic principles.
• Inspect and maintain MHE to ensure safety.
• Understand loading and unloading safety protocols.

Topics:
• Forklift and pallet jack safety
• Conveyor systems and automated equipment
• Manual handling and ergonomics
• Pre-use inspections and maintenance logs
• Loading dock safety and vehicle loading/unloading
• Traffic management within the DC

Day 7: Incident Investigation and Reporting

Objectives:
• Investigate workplace incidents using a systematic approach.
• Identify root causes and contributing factors.
• Complete incident reports accurately and promptly.
• Develop corrective and preventive action plans.

Topics:
• Incident types: accidents, near misses, dangerous occurrences
• Investigation techniques: interviewing, evidence gathering
• Root cause analysis tools (e.g., 5 Whys, fishbone)
• Report writing and documentation
• Legal requirements for incident notification
• Learning from incidents to prevent recurrence

Day 8: Safety and Security Audits and Compliance

Objectives:
• Plan and conduct internal safety and security audits.
• Evaluate compliance with legal and organisational standards.
• Identify non-conformances and recommend improvements.
• Understand the audit process and reporting.

Topics:
• Audit types: internal, external, regulatory
• Audit checklists and evidence collection
• Compliance with OHS Act, SANS, and company policies
• Non-conformance handling and corrective actions
• Audit report writing
• Continuous improvement through audits

Day 9: Integration, Review, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Synthesise all course content into a coherent safety and security management plan.
• Demonstrate practical application through a case study or simulation.
• Complete the final assessment (written and practical).
• Develop a personal action plan for implementation in the workplace.

• Review of key concepts from Days 1-8
• Case study: developing a DC safety and security plan
• Practical assessment: risk assessment and incident investigation
• Written assessment covering unit standard outcomes
• Feedback and course evaluation
• Certification and closing

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
