• Introduction to process flow diagrams and P&IDs

Day 2: Water Chemistry and Quality Parameters

Objectives:
• Explain critical water quality parameters and their significance.
• Perform basic water sampling and testing procedures.
• Interpret laboratory results and identify deviations.
• Understand chemical reactions involved in polishing processes.

• Physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters
• Sampling techniques, frequency, and chain of custody
• On-site testing: pH, conductivity, turbidity, chlorine residual
• Coagulation, flocculation, and precipitation chemistry
• Scaling and corrosion indices (LSI, RSI)

Day 3: Polishing Plant Equipment and Instrumentation

Day 4: Process Control and Automation Fundamentals

Day 5: Polishing Plant Start-Up and Shutdown Procedures

• Implement lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures.
• Document start-up and shutdown activities.

• Pre-start-up checks: valves, pumps, instrumentation

Day 7: Troubleshooting and Problem Solving

• Evaluate root causes and prevent recurrence.

• Common issues: low flow, high differential pressure, poor quality
• Membrane fouling types and cleaning strategies
• Chemical dosing problems: over/under dosing

Day 8: Advanced Control and Optimization Techniques

• Implement feed-forward and cascade control.
• Evaluate plant performance using KPIs.

Day 9: Integration, Compliance, and Final Assessment

• Demonstrate competence through practical assessment.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
