This course equips aspiring entrepreneurs and new venture managers with the skills to accurately determine the financial requirements of a start-up or expanding business. Participants will learn to identify start-up costs, operational expenses, and revenue projections, enabling them to create realistic financial plans that support sustainable growth and funding applications.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of business operations is advantageous.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Financial Requirements for a New Venture

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of financial planning in a new venture
• Identify the key components of financial requirements
• Distinguish between start-up and operational costs
• Recognise the role of financial statements in business planning
• Define basic financial terminology

Topics:
• Overview of financial planning for new ventures
• Types of financial requirements: capital, operational, and contingency
• Introduction to the business plan and its financial section
• Key financial statements: income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement
• Basic financial terminology: assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, expenses

Day 2: Estimating Start-Up and Operational Costs

Objectives:
• Calculate start-up costs including assets and initial expenses
• Estimate operational costs for the first year
• Differentiate between fixed and variable costs
• Apply cost estimation techniques to a sample venture
• Understand the impact of cost assumptions on financial projections

Topics:
• Identifying start-up costs: equipment, licenses, deposits, initial inventory
• Estimating operational costs: rent, salaries, utilities, marketing
• Fixed vs variable costs and their behaviour
• Methods for cost estimation: historical data, industry benchmarks, research
• Practical exercise: developing a cost schedule for a new venture

Day 3: Forecasting Revenue and Cash Flow

Objectives:
• Develop realistic revenue projections based on market research
• Understand cash flow cycles and their importance
• Prepare a cash flow forecast for the first 12 months
• Identify potential cash flow gaps and solutions
• Link revenue and cost forecasts to financial statements

Topics:
• Revenue forecasting methods: top-down, bottom-up, and trend analysis
• Pricing strategies and their effect on revenue
• Cash flow vs profit: key differences
• Preparing a cash flow forecast: timing of inflows and outflows
• Managing cash flow shortfalls: credit, loans, and contingency plans

Day 4: Determining Capital Requirements and Funding Options

Objectives:
• Calculate total capital needed for start-up and operations
• Evaluate different sources of funding: equity, debt, grants
• Understand the cost of capital and its impact on the venture
• Assess the suitability of funding options for different business types
• Prepare a funding proposal summary

Topics:
• Determining capital requirements: combining cost and revenue forecasts
• Sources of funding: personal savings, loans, investors, government grants
• Cost of capital: interest rates, equity dilution, repayment terms
• Criteria for choosing funding: risk, control, affordability
• Practical exercise: creating a funding plan for a sample venture

Day 5: Integrating Financial Plans and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Compile a complete financial plan for a new venture
• Present financial projections in a business plan format
• Review and refine financial assumptions based on feedback
• Understand legal and regulatory considerations for financial reporting
• Develop an action plan for ongoing financial management

Topics:
• Integrating cost, revenue, and cash flow forecasts into a financial plan
• Presenting financial information to stakeholders: banks, investors, partners
• Sensitivity analysis: testing assumptions and scenarios
• Legal and tax considerations for new ventures in South Africa
• Final assessment: preparing a financial requirements section for a business plan

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
