Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Business Operations Management

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of business operations management.
• Identify key operational processes and their interrelationships.
• Recognise the role of operations in achieving organisational goals.
• Gain familiarity with relevant legislative and regulatory frameworks.
• Discuss the impact of operations on customer satisfaction and profitability.

• Definition and scope of business operations management.
• Overview of operational processes: input, transformation, output.
• The operations management cycle: planning, organising, leading, controlling.
• Alignment of operations with business strategy.
• Introduction to SAQA unit standard 119668.
• Legal and regulatory considerations in operations.
• Case study: successful operations management in a South African context.

Day 2: Operational Planning and Resource Allocation

Objectives:
• Develop operational plans aligned with organisational objectives.
• Apply techniques for resource allocation and capacity planning.
• Understand the principles of supply chain management.
• Use forecasting methods to anticipate operational demands.
• Create a basic operational budget.

Topics:
• Strategic vs. operational planning.
• Setting operational objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs).
• Capacity planning and resource allocation methods.
• Supply chain fundamentals: procurement, inventory, logistics.
• Demand forecasting techniques.
• Budgeting for operations: fixed and variable costs.
• Practical exercise: develop an operational plan for a given scenario.

Day 3: Process Improvement and Quality Management

Objectives:
• Analyse existing operational processes for efficiency and effectiveness.
• Apply continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma.
• Understand quality management principles and tools.
• Identify and eliminate waste in operations.
• Implement basic process mapping and measurement techniques.

• Process mapping: flowcharts, swimlane diagrams.
• Introduction to Lean operations: value stream mapping.
• Six Sigma basics: DMAIC methodology.
• Quality management systems: ISO 9001 principles.
• Tools for quality: control charts, Pareto analysis, cause-and-effect diagrams.
• Continuous improvement culture and employee involvement.
• Workshop: map and improve a sample process.

Day 4: Operational Risk Management and Compliance

Objectives:
• Identify operational risks and their potential impact.
• Develop risk mitigation strategies and contingency plans.
• Understand health, safety, and environmental (HSE) requirements.
• Ensure compliance with relevant South African legislation.
• Monitor and report on operational risk indicators.

Topics:
• Risk identification and assessment techniques (e.g., SWOT, FMEA).
• Risk mitigation: prevention, reduction, transfer, acceptance.
• Business continuity and disaster recovery planning.
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements.
• Environmental management in operations.
• Compliance monitoring and reporting.
• Case study: managing operational risk in a manufacturing setting.

Day 5: Performance Measurement, Integration, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Establish performance metrics and dashboards for operations.
• Use data-driven decision-making to enhance operational performance.
• Integrate all operational components into a cohesive management system.
• Prepare for and participate in the unit standard assessment.
• Develop a personal action plan for applying learning in the workplace.

• Key performance indicators (KPIs) and balanced scorecards.
• Data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Operational audits and reviews.
• Integrating planning, quality, risk, and compliance.
• Review of course content and Q&A.
• Preparation for unit standard assessment.
• Assessment activities: knowledge test and practical application.
• Action planning for continuous improvement back on the job.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
