Day 1: Foundations of Industry Sector Analysis

Objectives:

• Identify the major components of a selected new venture's industry sector.
• Explain the importance of industry analysis for new ventures.
• Differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors.
• Recognise the role of value chains in industry structure.

• Components of industry structure: suppliers, customers, competitors.
• Overview of Porter's Five Forces model.
• The value chain concept and its application to new ventures.
• Case study: Analysing a simple industry sector.

Day 2: Mapping Industry Structure and Dynamics

• Map the key players and relationships within an industry sector.
• Analyse the competitive landscape and market segmentation.
• Identify trends and drivers of change in the industry.
• Use industry mapping tools to visualise structure.
• Assess the impact of regulatory and economic factors.

Day 3: Introduction to Procurement Systems

• Define procurement and explain its role in new ventures.
• Identify different types of procurement systems.
• Describe the procurement cycle and its stages.
• Differentiate between strategic and operational procurement.
• Recognise the importance of supplier relationship management.

• Basics of procurement: definitions, objectives, and importance.
• Types of procurement: direct, indirect, services, capital goods.
• The procurement cycle: need identification, sourcing, contracting, ordering, receipt, payment.
• Strategic procurement vs. transactional procurement.
• Supplier selection criteria and evaluation methods.

Day 4: Procurement Systems in the Context of Industry Sector

Objectives:
• Analyse how industry sector characteristics influence procurement systems.
• Evaluate procurement practices specific to the selected new venture's sector.
• Identify key suppliers and procurement risks in the sector.
• Apply procurement best practices to a new venture scenario.
• Understand the role of technology in modern procurement.

Topics:
• Sector-specific procurement: manufacturing, retail, services, etc.
• Supply chain risk management in different industries.
• E-procurement systems and digital tools.
• Sustainable procurement and ethical sourcing.
• Case study: Designing a procurement system for a new venture in a specific sector.

Day 5: Integrating Industry Analysis and Procurement for New Venture Success

Objectives:
• Synthesise industry sector analysis with procurement system design.
• Develop a comprehensive procurement strategy aligned with industry dynamics.
• Create a basic procurement plan for a new venture.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of procurement systems in supporting venture goals.
• Present findings and recommendations in a professional format.

Topics:
• Integrating industry analysis into procurement strategy.
• Developing a procurement plan: objectives, sourcing strategy, budget.
• Performance metrics for procurement: cost, quality, delivery, sustainability.
• Final project: Presenting an industry analysis and procurement system proposal.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
