Livestock And Game Pen Layout Planning And Design Training

SAQA US 117021 | NQF 5 | Credits 12 | Duration 9 Days
From $1,798 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills required to plan, design, and lay out livestock and game pens that meet animal welfare, safety, and operational efficiency standards. It covers key principles of pen layout, handling systems, and design considerations for various livestock and game species.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply principles of animal behaviour and welfare to pen layout planning.
  • Design pen layouts that ensure safe and efficient handling of livestock and game.
  • Evaluate existing pen layouts and recommend improvements.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Analyze site-specific factors influencing pen design, including terrain and climate.
  • Implement biosecurity measures in pen layout and design.

Target Audience

This course is designed for farm managers, game ranch operators, livestock handlers, and anyone involved in the planning and design of animal handling facilities.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Day 2: Animal Behaviour and Handling Requirements

Objectives:
• Analyse species-specific behavioural traits for common livestock and game • Identify stress factors in animal handling and transportation • Apply low-stress handling techniques to pen design • Evaluate the impact of group dynamics on pen layout

Topics:
• Cattle, sheep, goat, and pig behaviour patterns • Game species behaviour (e.g., antelope, buffalo) • Flight zones and point of balance concepts • Handling facility requirements for different species • Social hierarchy and its impact on pen grouping • Designing for animal flow and movement

Day 3: Site Assessment and Environmental Considerations

Objectives:
• Conduct comprehensive site analysis for pen development • Assess soil, topography, and drainage implications • Evaluate environmental impact and sustainability factors • Identify biosecurity risks and mitigation strategies

Topics:
• Topographical survey and soil analysis techniques • Water source assessment and management • Drainage system planning • Vegetation management and shade provision • Biosecurity zones and perimeter control • Environmental legislation compliance

Day 4: Structural Components and Materials

Objectives:
• Identify appropriate materials for different penning applications • Calculate structural requirements for various animal types • Select suitable fencing, gates, and handling equipment • Evaluate cost-effectiveness and durability of materials

Topics:
• Fencing types: electric, wire, palisade, game fencing • Gate design and placement principles • Loading ramp and crush pen specifications • Shelter and shade structure requirements • Watering and feeding system integration • Material selection for different climates and terrains

Objectives:
• Develop implementation plans for pen construction • Establish maintenance schedules and protocols • Conduct risk assessments for pen operations • Prepare for final assessment of unit standard competencies

Topics:
• Construction supervision and quality control • Maintenance scheduling for fences, gates, and equipment • Risk assessment methodology • Record keeping and documentation requirements • Final assessment preparation • Course review and certification process

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
