Description

This course equips learners with the technical skills needed to support project planning and scheduling service functions. Participants will learn to assist in developing project schedules, track progress, and maintain planning documentation to ensure effective project execution.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Project Planning and Scheduling

Objectives:
• Define project planning and scheduling concepts
• Understand the project life cycle and phases
• Identify the role of technical support in project planning
• Recognise key documents used in planning and scheduling

Topics:
• Overview of project management principles
• Project life cycle: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, closure
• Role of technical support in project planning
• Introduction to project planning documents: scope statement, WBS, schedule
• Key terminology: milestones, dependencies, critical path
• Importance of accurate planning and scheduling

Day 2: Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Objectives:
• Explain the purpose of a Work Breakdown Structure
• Decompose project deliverables into manageable work packages
• Create a WBS using hierarchical decomposition
• Verify WBS completeness using 100% rule

Topics:
• Definition and benefits of WBS
• WBS decomposition techniques
• Levels of WBS: project, deliverables, work packages
• WBS dictionary and coding schemes
• Practical exercise: create a WBS for a sample project
• Common mistakes in WBS creation

Day 3: Activity Definition and Sequencing

Objectives:
• Define activities required to complete work packages
• Identify dependencies between activities
• Create a project network diagram
• Apply precedence diagramming method (PDM)

Topics:
• Activity definition from WBS work packages
• Types of dependencies: FS, SS, FF, SF
• Lead and lag time
• Network diagramming: AON (Activity-on-Node)
• Milestone identification
• Practical exercise: develop activity list and network diagram

Day 4: Resource Estimation and Allocation

Objectives:
• Estimate resource requirements for project activities
• Allocate resources effectively considering availability
• Apply resource levelling techniques
• Understand resource calendars and constraints

• Types of resources: human, equipment, materials
• Estimation techniques: expert judgment, analogous, parametric
• Resource allocation and assignment
• Resource histograms and loading
• Resource levelling and smoothing
• Practical exercise: resource estimation and levelling

Day 5: Duration Estimation and Schedule Development

Objectives:
• Estimate activity durations using various techniques
• Develop a project schedule using critical path method (CPM)
• Calculate total float and identify critical path
• Understand schedule compression techniques

Topics:
• Duration estimation methods: PERT, three-point, analogous
• Critical path method (CPM) calculations
• Forward and backward pass
• Total float, free float, and project float
• Schedule compression: crashing and fast-tracking
• Practical exercise: calculate critical path and develop schedule

Day 6: Schedule Monitoring and Control

Objectives:
• Monitor project schedule against baseline
• Use earned value management (EVM) for schedule performance
• Identify schedule variances and implement corrective actions
• Update and communicate schedule changes

Topics:
• Schedule baseline and tracking methods
• Earned value management: PV, EV, AC, SPI
• Variance analysis and forecasting
• Schedule change control process
• Progress reporting and dashboards
• Practical exercise: calculate EVM metrics and interpret SPI

Day 7: Software Tools for Scheduling (MS Project / Primavera)

Objectives:
• Navigate project scheduling software interface
• Create a project schedule using software
• Input activities, dependencies, resources, and durations
• Generate reports and track progress in software

• Overview of scheduling software: MS Project, Primavera P6
• Setting up a new project: calendar, WBS, activities
• Entering dependencies and constraints
• Assigning resources and costs
• Baseline setting and progress tracking
• Report generation: Gantt charts, network diagrams, resource reports

Day 8: Advanced Scheduling Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply schedule risk analysis using Monte Carlo simulation
• Manage multiple projects and resource conflicts
• Implement agile scheduling techniques
• Understand schedule optimisation

Topics:
• Schedule risk analysis: probability distributions, Monte Carlo
• Multi-project scheduling and resource pooling
• Agile scheduling: sprint planning, backlog grooming
• Critical chain project management (CCPM)
• Schedule optimisation trade-offs
• Practical exercise: simple risk simulation

Day 9: Integration, Review, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate planning and scheduling components into a coherent plan
• Review and evaluate project schedules for quality
• Prepare for certification assessment
• Demonstrate competence through a capstone exercise

• Consolidating WBS, network, resources, and schedule
• Schedule quality checklist: logic, constraints, realism
• Capstone exercise: develop a complete project schedule for a case study
• Review of key concepts and exam preparation

Overview

Hands-on practicals allow learners to apply planning and scheduling techniques using industry-standard software and real-world scenarios. These supervised sessions reinforce theoretical concepts and build competence in creating, analysing, and managing project schedules.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: WBS and Activity Definition — Learners decompose a given project scope into a detailed WBS and define activities with dependencies using templates and software. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Resource and Duration Estimation — Learners estimate resource requirements and durations for activities, then allocate resources and perform levelling in scheduling software. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Schedule Development and Critical Path Analysis — Learners develop a full project schedule, calculate the critical path, and apply compression techniques using software tools. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Monitoring, EVM, and Reporting — Learners track a simulated project, calculate earned value metrics, and produce progress reports with corrective actions. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
