This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify and prevent factors that cause deterioration in heritage collections. Participants will learn to assess environmental conditions, implement preventive measures, and apply integrated pest management strategies to ensure the long-term preservation of cultural heritage assets.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Heritage and Conservation

• Outline the course structure and assessment criteria.

• Introduction to Unit Standard 114530.
• Ethics and principles in heritage management.

Day 2: Understanding Deterioration – Causes and Mechanisms

Objectives:
• Identify physical, chemical, and biological deterioration factors.
• Explain how environmental conditions accelerate decay.
• Distinguish between natural and human-induced deterioration.
• Recognise early warning signs of damage.
• Apply basic diagnostic observation techniques.

• Physical deterioration: temperature, moisture, freeze-thaw.
• Chemical deterioration: pollution, salts, acid rain.
• Biological deterioration: fungi, insects, algae.
• Human factors: vandalism, neglect, poor interventions.

Day 3: Preventive Conservation Planning

• Apply the 'agents of deterioration' framework.

Day 4: Environmental Monitoring and Control

Objectives:
• Measure and interpret temperature, relative humidity, and light levels.
• Set acceptable thresholds for different materials.
• Use monitoring equipment correctly.
• Implement passive and active environmental controls.
• Evaluate effectiveness of control measures.

• Monitoring tools: dataloggers, hygrometers, lux meters.
• Ideal conditions for stone, wood, metal, textiles.
• Passive control: building design, shading, ventilation.
• Active control: HVAC, dehumidifiers.

Day 5: Materials Science for Heritage

• Understand material decay mechanisms.
• Select appropriate conservation materials.
• Assess compatibility of new with old materials.
• Recognise the impact of cleaning and treatments.

• Stone, brick, mortar, wood, metals, glass, ceramics.
• Porosity, permeability, and strength.
• Chemical and physical decay pathways.
• Conservation materials: consolidants, adhesives.
• Reversibility and retreatability principles.
• Laboratory demonstration: material testing.

Day 6: Structural and Surface Conservation

Objectives:
• Assess structural stability of heritage buildings.
• Apply non-destructive testing methods.
• Plan surface cleaning and consolidation.
• Understand repair techniques for masonry and timber.
• Integrate conservation with structural safety.

• Structural assessment: cracks, settlement, load paths.
• Non-destructive testing: ground-penetrating radar, thermography.
• Cleaning methods: laser, chemical, mechanical.
• Consolidation of stone and wood.
• Repair techniques: grouting, stitching, splicing.

Day 7: Biological Deterioration Management

• Identify common biological agents damaging heritage.

• Prevent and treat mould, algae, and lichen.
• Balance ecological concerns with conservation.

• Address intellectual property and cultural rights.

Day 13: Assessment, Review, and Certification

• Complete summative assessments for Unit Standard 114530.
• Demonstrate understanding of all course modules.
• Present a portfolio of evidence.
• Receive feedback and certification.
• Plan for continued professional development.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
