Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Community Heritage and Preservation

Objectives:
• Define key concepts of community heritage and preservation.
• Understand the importance of heritage in South African communities.
• Identify different types of heritage: tangible, intangible, and natural.
• Explore the role of community participation in heritage preservation.
• Introduce relevant legislation and ethical frameworks.

• What is community heritage? Tangible, intangible, and natural heritage.
• The value of heritage for identity, tourism, and economic development.
• Overview of South African heritage legislation (e.g., NHRA, NHC).
• Ethical considerations in heritage work.
• Introduction to facilitation and its role in heritage awareness.

Day 2: Facilitation Skills for Heritage Awareness

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of effective facilitation.
• Develop active listening and questioning techniques.
• Learn to manage group dynamics and diverse perspectives.
• Practice creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.
• Apply facilitation techniques to heritage contexts.

• Communication skills: active listening, paraphrasing, open-ended questions.
• Handling conflict and sensitive heritage topics.

Day 3: Community Engagement and Stakeholder Mapping

• Identify key stakeholders in community heritage preservation.
• Learn methods for effective community engagement.
• Understand power dynamics and representivity in heritage processes.
• Develop a stakeholder mapping and engagement plan.
• Explore case studies of successful community heritage projects.

Day 5: Heritage Interpretation and Storytelling

• Understand principles of heritage interpretation.
• Develop storytelling skills to convey heritage value.
• Learn to tailor interpretation for different audiences.
• Create interpretive materials (e.g., panels, brochures, digital content).
• Evaluate the effectiveness of interpretive programs.

• Storytelling techniques: narrative arcs, emotional connection, authenticity.
• Audience analysis: children, tourists, community members.
• Designing interpretive media: text, images, audio guides.

Day 6: Planning and Implementing Heritage Awareness Campaigns

Objectives:
• Learn to design a heritage awareness campaign.
• Identify goals, target audiences, and key messages.
• Develop a campaign plan with timeline and resources.
• Explore use of social media and local media for outreach.
• Practice presenting a campaign proposal.

• Campaign planning: SMART objectives, stakeholder roles.
• Message development: framing heritage issues compellingly.
• Channels: community radio, social media, events, school programmes.
• Budgeting and resource mobilisation.
• Group activity: develop a mini-campaign plan for a local heritage site.

Day 7: Integration, Evaluation, and Action Planning

Objectives:
• Synthesise learning from previous days.
• Understand monitoring and evaluation of heritage initiatives.
• Develop a personal action plan for applying skills.
• Reflect on challenges and opportunities in community heritage.
• Present a final project integrating all course components.

• Indicators of success: community engagement, awareness, preservation.
• Building partnerships and networks for sustainability.
• Personal action planning: setting goals, identifying resources.
• Final presentations: community heritage facilitation plan.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
