This course equips craft entrepreneurs and small business owners with the skills to accurately cost and price their products for sustainable enterprise. Participants will learn to calculate material, labour, and overhead costs, apply appropriate markup strategies, and set prices that ensure profitability while remaining competitive in the market.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Sustainable Enterprise and Costing Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the concept of sustainable enterprise and its relevance to craft businesses.
• Define key costing terms: fixed costs, variable costs, direct costs, indirect costs.
• Identify the components of cost price for craft products.
• Explain the relationship between cost, price, and profit.

• Introduction to costing: why it matters for sustainability.
• Classification of costs: fixed vs variable, direct vs indirect.
• Cost price components: materials, labour, overheads.
• The cost-price-profit equation.

Day 2: Gathering and Calculating Costs for Craft Products

Objectives:
• List all cost inputs for a typical craft product.
• Calculate direct material costs accurately.
• Calculate direct labour costs using time studies.
• Allocate overhead costs using simple methods.

Topics:
• Identifying cost inputs: materials, labour, tools, utilities, rent, etc.
• Measuring material usage and waste.
• Labour costing: time tracking and hourly rates.
• Overhead allocation: direct labour hours or machine hours.
• Practical exercise: calculate total cost for a sample craft item.
• Common pitfalls in cost calculation.

Day 3: Pricing Strategies for Craft Products

Objectives:
• Differentiate between cost-plus, value-based, and market-based pricing.
• Apply cost-plus pricing to determine selling price.
• Analyse market prices and competitor pricing.
• Adjust pricing for different sales channels (retail, wholesale, online).

Day 5: Cost Control and Record Keeping for Sustainability

Day 6: Pricing for Different Markets and Value Addition

• Adapt pricing for local, national, and export markets.
• Incorporate value-added elements to justify higher prices.
• Understand the impact of VAT and taxes on pricing.
• Develop a pricing policy for a craft business.

• Market segmentation and pricing strategies for each segment.

Day 7: Integrating Costing and Pricing into Business Planning

• Compile a comprehensive cost and price plan for a craft product range.
• Present a sustainable pricing strategy to peers.
• Evaluate the financial viability of a craft business using costing tools.
• Create an action plan for ongoing cost management and pricing review.

• Building a product cost sheet for multiple items.
• Creating a pricing strategy document.
• Assessing business viability: profit margins, break-even, cash flow.
• Presentation of individual or group projects.
• Feedback and peer review.
• Action planning for implementation.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
