Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Principles of Craft Product Design

Objectives:
• Understand the role of design in craft product development
• Identify key elements and principles of design
• Analyse market trends and consumer preferences
• Apply design thinking methodologies to craft products
• Explore materials and their properties for craft production

Topics:
• Introduction to craft product design and its economic significance
• Elements of design: line, shape, colour, texture, space
• Principles of design: balance, proportion, emphasis, rhythm, unity
• Market research and trend analysis in the craft sector
• Design thinking process: empathise, define, ideate, prototype, test
• Material selection criteria: durability, aesthetics, cost, sustainability

Day 2: Product Selection and Specification Development

Objectives:
• Evaluate craft product concepts against design specifications
• Develop detailed product specifications
• Conduct cost analysis and feasibility studies
• Select appropriate production techniques
• Create prototypes and refine designs

Topics:
• Criteria for product selection: functionality, marketability, manufacturability
• Writing comprehensive product specifications
• Cost estimation: materials, labour, overheads, profit margins
• Feasibility assessment: technical, financial, operational
• Production techniques: handcrafting, moulding, assembly, finishing
• Prototyping methods and iterative design improvements

Day 3: Production Line Planning and Workflow Design

Objectives:
• Design an efficient production line layout
• Determine equipment and tooling requirements
• Establish standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Plan workflow and production scheduling
• Implement quality control checkpoints

Topics:
• Production line layout: linear, cellular, fixed-position
• Equipment selection: manual tools, machinery, automation options
• Developing SOPs for each production stage
• Workflow analysis: process mapping, bottlenecks, cycle time
• Production scheduling: batch size, lead time, capacity planning
• Quality control: inspection points, testing methods, defect prevention

Day 4: Implementation, Training, and Health & Safety

Objectives:
• Develop a production line implementation plan
• Train production staff on SOPs and equipment use
• Integrate health and safety protocols
• Manage change and address implementation challenges
• Monitor initial production runs

Topics:
• Implementation plan: milestones, resources, timeline
• Staff training: hands-on sessions, competency assessment
• Occupational health and safety: risk assessment, PPE, emergency procedures
• Change management: communication, resistance, support
• Pilot production: monitoring, data collection, adjustments
• Documentation: training records, safety files, production logs

Day 5: Quality Assurance, Continuous Improvement, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Establish quality assurance systems
• Apply continuous improvement methodologies
• Evaluate production line performance
• Conduct final product inspection and certification
• Reflect on learning and complete assessment

Topics:
• Quality assurance: ISO standards, audit procedures, corrective actions
• Continuous improvement: Kaizen, 5S, root cause analysis
• Performance metrics: OEE, yield, defect rates, throughput
• Final product inspection: criteria, sampling, certification
• Assessment: theory test, practical demonstration, portfolio submission
• Course review and feedback session

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
