This course equips participants with the ability to visually communicate complex concepts and ideas effectively. None — open enrollment. Basic computer literacy is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Visual Communication

Objectives:
• Define visual communication and its role in concept representation
• Identify key principles of visual design (balance, contrast, hierarchy)
• Distinguish between different visual communication media
• Understand the impact of audience and context on visual choices

Topics:
• Introduction to visual communication theory
• Core design principles: balance, contrast, alignment, repetition, proximity
• Overview of visual media: sketches, diagrams, infographics, digital renderings
• Audience analysis and contextual considerations
• Ethical considerations in visual representation

Day 2: Sketching and Ideation Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply freehand sketching to generate and capture ideas
• Use perspective and proportion techniques effectively
• Develop rapid visualisation skills for concept exploration
• Translate verbal concepts into visual roughs

Topics:
• Basic sketching tools and materials
• Perspective drawing: one-point, two-point, and isometric views
• Proportion and scale in concept sketches
• Rapid ideation and thumbnail sketches
• Annotating sketches for clarity

Day 3: Diagramming and Information Visualisation

Objectives:
• Create clear and accurate diagrams to represent processes and relationships
• Use flowcharts, mind maps, and Venn diagrams effectively
• Apply hierarchy and grouping to enhance readability
• Integrate symbols and icons consistently

Topics:
• Types of diagrams: flowcharts, mind maps, tree diagrams, Venn diagrams
• Best practices for diagram layout and readability
• Using symbols and icons as visual shorthand
• Case studies: diagramming complex concepts
• Hands-on exercise: create a process diagram

Day 4: Typography and Colour Theory

Objectives:
• Select appropriate typefaces for different communication purposes
• Apply colour theory to enhance meaning and emotional impact
• Combine typography and colour harmoniously
• Ensure legibility and accessibility in visual designs

Topics:
• Typography basics: type classifications, hierarchy, spacing
• Colour theory: colour wheel, harmonies, psychological effects
• Accessibility considerations: contrast, colour blindness
• Combining type and colour in layouts
• Practical exercise: design a concept poster

Day 5: Digital Tools for Visual Communication

Objectives:
• Use vector and raster graphics software for concept representation
• Create digital sketches and diagrams using industry-standard tools
• Manage layers, selections, and effects effectively
• Export and prepare visuals for different media

Topics:
• Introduction to design software: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or alternatives
• Vector vs raster graphics: when to use each
• Working with layers, masks, and blending modes
• Digital sketching and diagramming workflows
• File formats and export settings for print and screen

Day 6: Advanced Visual Storytelling and Presentation

Objectives:
• Construct a visual narrative to communicate a concept story
• Design effective presentation slides and storyboards
• Use visual metaphors and analogies to simplify complex ideas
• Critique and refine visual communication for impact

Topics:
• Elements of visual storytelling: sequence, pacing, emphasis
• Storyboarding techniques for concepts and processes
• Designing presentation slides: layout, data visualisation, consistency
• Using visual metaphors and analogies
• Peer critique and iterative improvement

Day 7: Integration, Portfolio, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Produce a comprehensive visual communication project integrating all skills
• Present and justify design choices to peers and assessors
• Evaluate visual communication against industry standards
• Reflect on learning and identify areas for further development

Topics:
• Project brief: create a visual communication package for a given concept
• Developing a cohesive visual identity across deliverables
• Presentation skills and defending design decisions
• Assessment criteria and feedback session
• Portfolio compilation and future learning pathways

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
