Description

This course equips learners with the skills to manage accounts receivable and credit policies effectively within a corporate environment. Participants will learn to assess creditworthiness, implement collection strategies, and optimise cash flow while minimising financial risk.

This course is designed for finance professionals, credit controllers, accounts receivable clerks, and managers responsible for credit management and debt collection in corporate organisations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Accounts Receivable and Credit Management

Objectives:
• Understand the role and importance of accounts receivable in business
• Define key terms: credit policy, trade credit, ageing schedule, DSO
• Identify the components of a credit policy
• Recognise the impact of poor credit management on cash flow

Topics:
• Overview of accounts receivable and its financial significance
• Key concepts: credit terms, credit limits, payment terms
• The credit policy framework: objectives and components
• Introduction to the order-to-cash cycle
• Consequences of weak credit management: bad debts, cash flow problems

Day 2: Credit Assessment and Customer Evaluation

Objectives:
• Apply the 5 Cs of credit (Character, Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Conditions)
• Evaluate customer creditworthiness using financial statements and credit reports
• Set appropriate credit limits and terms
• Understand legal considerations in credit granting

Topics:
• The 5 Cs of credit: detailed analysis
• Sources of credit information: credit bureaus, trade references, bank references
• Analysing financial statements: liquidity ratios, profitability ratios
• Setting credit limits: scoring models and judgmental approaches
• Legal framework: National Credit Act (NCA), consumer protection

Day 3: Invoicing, Collections, and Dispute Management

Objectives:
• Design effective invoicing processes to minimise errors
• Implement collection strategies: aging buckets, dunning letters, phone calls
• Handle customer disputes and deductions professionally
• Use technology for automated collections

Topics:
• Invoicing best practices: accuracy, timeliness, electronic invoicing
• Collection strategies: prioritising by ageing, escalation procedures
• Dunning process: letters, emails, phone scripts
• Managing disputes: root cause analysis, resolution workflows
• Technology tools: ERP systems, collection software, automation

Day 4: Performance Metrics and Reporting

Objectives:
• Calculate and interpret key accounts receivable metrics: DSO, ageing schedule, collection effectiveness index
• Prepare management reports for decision-making
• Benchmark performance against industry standards
• Identify areas for improvement using data

Topics:
• Key performance indicators (KPIs): Days Sales Outstanding (DSO), ageing schedule, Bad Debt Ratio
• Collection Effectiveness Index (CEI) and other advanced metrics
• Reporting formats: dashboards, variance analysis, trend analysis
• Benchmarking: industry comparisons, internal targets
• Using reports to drive credit policy adjustments

Day 5: Advanced Credit Policies and Integration

Objectives:
• Develop and revise a comprehensive credit policy
• Integrate accounts receivable management with sales and finance
• Manage risk through credit insurance and securitisation
• Create an action plan for continuous improvement

Topics:
• Designing a credit policy: risk appetite, terms, approval authority
• Cross-functional integration: sales incentives, cash flow forecasting
• Risk mitigation: credit insurance, factoring, securitisation
• Change management: implementing policy updates
• Action planning: setting targets, monitoring, reviewing

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
