  • Analyze security risks and vulnerabilities to determine appropriate access control measures.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical security systems and recommend improvements.
  • Design access control policies and procedures that comply with legal and organizational requirements.
  • Implement integrated security solutions including electronic access control, surveillance, and alarm systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage security incidents and conduct post-incident reviews.

Target Audience

Security managers, facility managers, operations supervisors, and any professionals responsible for physical security and access control in corporate or industrial settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Topics:
• Introduction to access control and physical security management.
• Threat landscape: internal vs external threats.
• Security principles: deterrence, detection, delay, response.
• Layers of security: perimeter, building, interior, asset.

• Select appropriate lighting, locks, and alarms.
• Understand security glazing and door construction.

Topics:
• Perimeter security: fences, walls, bollards, vehicle barriers.
• Gates and gate operators: manual, automatic, sliding, swinging.
• CPTED principles: natural surveillance, access control, territorial reinforcement.
• Security lighting: types, placement, and control.
• Locking hardware: mechanical, electromechanical, padlocks.
• Security doors, frames, and glazing standards.
• Intrusion detection systems: sensors, motion detectors, glass break detectors.
• Hands-on: inspecting and testing physical barriers.

Day 4: Security Policies, Procedures, and Incident Management

Objectives:

• Conduct a risk assessment and design a security plan.
• Prepare for certification and continued professional development.

Topics:
• System integration: access control, CCTV, alarm, intercom.
• Cloud-based access control and mobile credentials.
• Artificial intelligence in security: analytics, facial recognition.
• Cybersecurity for physical security systems.
• Designing a security plan for a sample facility.
• Group exercise: risk assessment and mitigation.
• Course review and assessment preparation.
• Professional development pathways and resources.

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practical component reinforces theoretical knowledge through hands-on exercises with access control hardware, system configuration, and security audits. Learners will install and test card readers, configure software, and conduct physical inspections to develop real-world skills.

Practical Activities
  • Access Control Hardware Installation and Testing — Learners physically install a card reader, electric strike, and controller, then test operation and troubleshoot faults. (4h)
  • Access Control Software Configuration — Learners configure user credentials, access levels, and time schedules on a PC-based access control system. (4h)
  • Perimeter Security Inspection and CPTED Assessment — Learners inspect a mock perimeter, identify vulnerabilities, and recommend improvements using CPTED principles. (4h)
  • Security Audit and Incident Response Simulation — Learners conduct a physical security audit and participate in a simulated breach incident response drill. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
