Description

This course provides a comprehensive understanding of working class theories and their application in contemporary labour studies. Learners will explore historical and modern perspectives on class, work, and labour relations, enabling them to critically analyze workplace dynamics and contribute to equitable labour practices.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Working Class Theories and Labour Studies

Objectives:
• Define key concepts in working class theories and labour studies.
• Trace the historical development of labour movements in South Africa.
• Identify major theoretical perspectives on class and labour.
• Explain the relationship between labour, capital, and the state.

Topics:
• Introduction to working class theories: Marxism, socialism, and trade unionism.
• Historical overview of the South African labour movement.
• Key concepts: class, exploitation, alienation, and solidarity.
• The role of the state in labour relations.
• Intersectionality: race, gender, and class in labour studies.
• Overview of international labour standards and organisations.

Day 2: Labour Law, Organising, and Collective Bargaining

Objectives:
• Analyse the South African labour legislative framework.
• Describe the process of trade union organising and collective bargaining.
• Evaluate the role of strikes and protest action in labour relations.
• Apply theoretical concepts to contemporary labour issues.

Topics:
• Labour legislation in South Africa: LRA, BCEA, EEA, and SDA.
• Trade union structures and strategies for organising.
• Collective bargaining processes and dispute resolution.
• The right to strike and protest action: legal and ethical dimensions.
• Case study: recent labour disputes in South Africa.
• The impact of globalisation on local labour markets.

Day 3: Contemporary Challenges and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Critically assess current challenges facing the working class in South Africa.
• Develop strategies for worker empowerment and social justice.
• Synthesise theoretical knowledge with practical labour issues.
• Present a group analysis of a labour-related problem.

Topics:
• Contemporary issues: precarious work, gig economy, and automation.
• Labour and social movements: community unionism and alliances.
• Policy advocacy and labour law reform.
• Preparing for a career in labour studies: roles and skills.
• Group project: analysing a labour issue and proposing solutions.
• Course wrap-up and evaluation.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
