This course equips learners with the ability to read, interpret, and apply psychrometric charts for accurate calculations in HVAC and environmental control systems. Participants will gain practical skills to determine air properties, analyze thermal comfort conditions, and optimize energy efficiency in building services.

  • Interpret psychrometric charts to identify air properties such as dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature, relative humidity, and dew point.
  • Apply psychrometric calculations to determine sensible and latent heat loads in air conditioning processes.
  • Analyze air mixing, heating, cooling, humidification, and dehumidification processes using psychrometric charts.
  • Evaluate the impact of psychrometric conditions on human thermal comfort and indoor air quality.
  • Demonstrate accurate plotting of air state points and process lines on psychrometric charts.
  • Perform calculations for mass flow rate, enthalpy, and moisture content in air handling systems.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Psychrometrics and Chart Interpretation

Objectives:
• Define psychrometry and explain its importance in HVAC and industrial processes.
• Identify and describe the key properties of moist air: dry-bulb, wet-bulb, dew-point temperatures, humidity ratio, relative humidity, and enthalpy.
• Interpret the layout and scales of a standard psychrometric chart.
• Locate and read specific points on the chart given two independent properties.
• Perform basic calculations for sensible and latent heat using the chart.

Topics:
• Introduction to psychrometry and moist air properties.
• Understanding the psychrometric chart: axes, saturation curve, constant property lines.
• Determining air properties from given data (dry-bulb + wet-bulb, dry-bulb + relative humidity, etc.).
• Concept of sensible heat ratio and plotting air processes (heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification).
• Practical exercises: reading chart values and calculating enthalpy differences.
• Overview of unit conversions and typical South African climatic conditions.

Day 2: Advanced Calculations and Practical Applications

Objectives:
• Calculate mixed air conditions using the psychrometric chart and lever rule.
• Determine cooling coil load and leaving air conditions for sensible and latent cooling.
• Analyse heating and humidification processes for comfort and industrial applications.
• Apply psychrometric principles to troubleshoot common HVAC system issues.
• Demonstrate competency through integrated calculation scenarios and assessment.

Topics:
• Mixing of air streams: graphical and algebraic methods.
• Cooling and dehumidification: coil bypass factor, apparatus dew point, and load calculations.
• Heating and humidification: steam and water spray humidifier performance.
• Adiabatic saturation and evaporative cooling principles.
• Psychrometric analysis of typical air conditioning cycles (e.g., all-air systems).
• Practical workshop: solving real-world problems and verifying results with chart.
• Unit standard assessment: perform calculations and chart interpretations under supervision.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
