Day 1: Introduction to Environmental Monitoring and SAQA Context

• Recognise the importance of monitoring in environmental management systems.

• Introduction to SAQA Unit Standard 116524.
• South African environmental legislation (NEMA, NWA, etc.).
• Key terminology: baseline, indicator, threshold, etc.
• Link between monitoring and corrective actions.
• Roles and responsibilities of environmental monitors.

Day 2: Planning Environmental Monitoring Programmes

Objectives:
• Develop monitoring objectives based on site-specific conditions.
• Identify monitoring parameters for air, water, soil, and biodiversity.
• Establish sampling locations and frequencies.
• Create a monitoring plan document.

Topics:
• Setting monitoring objectives and scope.
• Selection of environmental indicators.
• Designing sampling networks (grid, random, stratified).
• Determining sampling frequency and duration.
• Documenting the monitoring plan.
• Case study: developing a monitoring plan for a mining site.

Day 3: Sampling Techniques and Equipment

• Describe proper sampling methods for various media.
• Demonstrate correct use of common monitoring equipment.
• Apply chain of custody and sample preservation procedures.

Day 4: Field Measurements and Data Collection

• Perform field measurements for key parameters.
• Record data accurately using standard forms.
• Use GPS and other tools for location tracking.
• Ensure health and safety during fieldwork.

• Measuring pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity.
• Weather measurements: temperature, wind, rainfall.

Day 5: Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC)

• Use control samples and replicate measurements.

Day 10: Verification and Close-Out of Corrective Actions

• Verify that corrective actions have been completed.
• Assess effectiveness through follow-up monitoring.
• Document close-out procedures.
• Identify lessons learned for continuous improvement.

• Verification methods: inspection, re-sampling, audit.
• Effectiveness criteria and performance indicators.

Day 11: Integration of Monitoring and Corrective Actions into EMS

Objectives:
• Link monitoring data to corrective action triggers.
• Integrate procedures into the organisation's EMS.

• Conduct management review of monitoring and corrective actions.

• Monitoring as part of the EMS cycle.

Day 12: Practical Assessment and Course Review

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
