Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Christian Education Programme Design

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of Christian education in the South African context. • Identify key biblical and theological principles underpinning programme design. • Explore the role of the curriculum developer in faith-based settings. • Recognise the importance of outcomes-based education and SAQA alignment.

Topics:
• Introduction to Christian education philosophy. • Overview of SAQA and NQF frameworks. • Biblical foundations for teaching and learning. • The curriculum development cycle. • Stakeholder analysis in church and community contexts.

Day 2: Needs Assessment and Learner Profiling

Objectives:
• Conduct a needs assessment for a Christian education programme. • Profile target learners across age groups and spiritual maturity levels. • Apply principles of andragogy and pedagogy in faith contexts. • Use assessment data to inform programme goals.

Topics:
• Methods for needs analysis (surveys, interviews, focus groups). • Learner diversity: children, youth, adults, and seniors. • Spiritual formation stages and learning readiness. • Aligning learner needs with biblical outcomes. • Documenting assessment findings.

Day 3: Designing Learning Outcomes and Curriculum Frameworks

Objectives:
• Write measurable, biblically integrated learning outcomes. • Structure a curriculum framework with scope and sequence. • Select appropriate content and resources for Christian education. • Ensure alignment with unit standard 115945 and SAQA requirements.

Topics:
• Bloom's taxonomy and faith-based outcomes. • Writing outcomes across cognitive, affective, and spiritual domains. • Scope and sequence planning. • Resource selection: Bible study materials, multimedia, and texts. • Mapping outcomes to assessment criteria.

Day 4: Lesson Planning and Instructional Strategies

Objectives:
• Develop detailed lesson plans for Christian education sessions. • Apply varied instructional strategies suitable for faith learning. • Integrate interactive and experiential learning activities. • Plan for differentiated instruction to meet diverse needs.

Topics:
• Components of a lesson plan (objectives, activities, assessment). • Teaching methods: storytelling, discussion, drama, and projects. • Using questions to promote critical thinking and reflection. • Adapting lessons for mixed-ability groups. • Incorporating prayer and worship into lessons.

Day 5: Assessment Design and Evaluation in Christian Education

Objectives:
• Design formative and summative assessments aligned to outcomes. • Create rubrics and other assessment tools for spiritual growth. • Evaluate programme effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative measures. • Understand principles of fair and ethical assessment.

Topics:
• Types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, summative. • Designing portfolios, projects, and tests for faith learning. • Rubric construction for attitudinal and skill outcomes. • Collecting feedback from learners and stakeholders. • Using evaluation data for programme improvement.

Day 6: Event Planning and Implementation for Christian Programmes

Objectives:
• Plan a Christian education event (retreat, seminar, conference). • Develop a project plan with timelines, budgets, and resources. • Coordinate logistics, speakers, and volunteers. • Ensure alignment with programme objectives and spiritual goals.

Topics:
• Event lifecycle: concept, planning, execution, evaluation. • Budgeting and resource mobilisation. • Venue selection and setup for learning environments. • Volunteer recruitment, training, and management. • Risk management and contingency planning.

Day 7: Facilitation Skills and Group Dynamics

Objectives:
• Facilitate adult learning groups using participatory methods. • Manage group dynamics and encourage inclusive participation. • Handle difficult questions and conflicts constructively. • Model Christian values in facilitation.

Topics:
• Roles of a facilitator versus a teacher. • Techniques for engaging learners: icebreakers, small groups, debriefs. • Dealing with dominant and quiet participants. • Conflict resolution grounded in biblical principles. • Creating a safe and respectful learning atmosphere.

Day 8: Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Implement quality assurance processes for Christian education programmes. • Conduct programme reviews and make data-driven improvements. • Document and report on programme outcomes. • Ensure compliance with SAQA and church governance standards.

Topics:
• QA frameworks: internal and external moderation. • Developing a programme improvement plan. • Reporting to stakeholders: boards, funders, and congregations. • Using learner feedback and assessment results. • Ethical considerations in programme evaluation.

Day 9: Integration, Capstone Project, and Certification

Objectives:
• Integrate all course components into a comprehensive programme design. • Present a capstone project: a complete Christian education programme or event plan. • Receive feedback and refine the project. • Prepare for certification and ongoing professional development.

• Capstone project guidelines and assessment criteria. • Peer review and constructive feedback. • Final project presentations. • Pathways for further learning and SAQA credits. • Commitment to lifelong learning in Christian education.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
