This course equips mission operations personnel with the skills to manage communication systems effectively in complex operational environments. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Communication Systems in Mission Operations

Objectives:
• Define communication systems and their role in mission operations.
• Identify key components of mission communication architectures.
• Understand the importance of reliable communications for mission success.
• Outline the course structure and learning outcomes.

• Overview of mission operations and communication requirements
• Basic communication system components: transmitters, receivers, antennas
• Communication links: uplink, downlink, crosslink
• Spectrum allocation and regulatory considerations
• Introduction to SAQA unit standard 114845

Day 2: Communication Fundamentals and Signal Propagation

Objectives:
• Explain basic principles of signal propagation and modulation.
• Differentiate between analog and digital modulation techniques.
• Describe factors affecting signal quality: noise, interference, attenuation.
• Calculate link budgets for simple communication scenarios.

Topics:
• Electromagnetic spectrum and frequency bands
• Modulation techniques: AM, FM, PSK, QAM
• Signal propagation: free space loss, atmospheric effects
• Noise sources and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
• Link budget analysis fundamentals

Day 3: Communication System Hardware and Infrastructure

Objectives:
• Identify various types of antennas and their applications.
• Describe the function of amplifiers, filters, and multiplexers.
• Understand the role of ground stations and satellite repeaters.
• Explain the principles of duplexing and multiple access.

• Antenna types: parabolic, phased array, dipole
• RF components: amplifiers, mixers, filters
• Ground station architecture and subsystems
• Satellite transponders and repeaters
• Multiple access techniques: FDMA, TDMA, CDMA

Day 4: Network Protocols and Data Link Management

Objectives:
• Explain the OSI model and its relevance to mission communications.
• Describe common data link protocols used in space operations.
• Understand error detection and correction mechanisms.
• Configure basic parameters for a communication link.

• Data link layer protocols: HDLC, CCSDS

Day 5: Mission Operations Communication Procedures

Objectives:
• Outline standard operating procedures for mission communications.
• Describe coordination between mission control and remote assets.

• Apply procedures for nominal and contingency scenarios.

Day 6: System Performance Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Identify key performance indicators for communication systems.
• Use monitoring tools to assess system health.
• Diagnose common faults: signal degradation, link dropout.
• Implement corrective actions for performance issues.

• Performance metrics: BER, Eb/N0, throughput
• Monitoring tools: spectrum analyzers, network monitors

Day 7: Security and Reliability in Mission Communications

• Explain security threats to communication systems.
• Describe encryption and authentication techniques.
• Understand reliability concepts: redundancy, diversity.
• Apply risk management strategies to communication links.

• Threat landscape: jamming, eavesdropping, spoofing
• Encryption standards: AES, public-key infrastructure

• Redundancy: hot/cold spares, path diversity

Day 8: Advanced Topics and Emerging Technologies

Objectives:
• Describe advanced modulation and coding schemes.
• Explain the role of software-defined radios in mission ops.
• Understand optical communications and quantum key distribution.
• Evaluate the impact of new technologies on mission design.

• Adaptive modulation and coding
• Software-defined radio (SDR) architectures
• Optical communications: laser links, free-space optics
• Quantum communications basics
• Networking in space: inter-satellite links, delay-tolerant networking

Day 9: Integration, Simulation, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate knowledge to design a communication system for a mission scenario.
• Participate in a simulated mission operations exercise.
• Demonstrate troubleshooting and decision-making skills.
• Complete the final assessment aligned with unit standard 114845.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
