Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to the International Financial Environment

Objectives:
• Define the international financial environment and its key participants.
• Explain the role and functions of the foreign exchange market.
• Identify major exchange rate regimes and their characteristics.
• Describe the fundamental theories of exchange rate determination.

• Overview of the global financial system
• Key participants: central banks, commercial banks, multinational corporations
• Structure and functions of the foreign exchange market
• Spot and forward markets
• Exchange rate regimes: fixed, floating, and managed floats
• Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) and Interest Rate Parity (IRP)
• Factors influencing exchange rates
• Introduction to balance of payments

Day 2: International Financial Markets and Instruments

Objectives:
• Distinguish between the Eurocurrency, Eurobond, and international equity markets.
• Explain the features and uses of major international financial instruments.
• Analyse the role of international banks in facilitating global finance.
• Evaluate the impact of financial innovation on international markets.

• Eurocurrency market: origins, growth, and significance
• Eurobond market: types, issuance, and yields
• International equity markets: ADRs, GDRs, and cross-listings
• Derivative instruments: forwards, futures, options, swaps
• International banking: offshore centres and regulatory frameworks
• Financial innovation: securitisation, structured products
• Market integration and its effects on capital flows
• Case study: a recent international bond issuance

Day 3: Foreign Exchange Risk and Management

Objectives:
• Identify and measure different types of foreign exchange exposure.
• Apply hedging techniques using forwards, futures, options, and swaps.
• Analyse the effectiveness of internal hedging strategies.
• Evaluate the role of currency derivatives in risk management.

Topics:
• Transaction, translation, and economic exposure
• Measuring exposure: VaR and sensitivity analysis
• Forward contracts and money market hedges
• Currency futures and options: pricing and strategies
• Currency swaps: structure and applications
• Internal techniques: netting, matching, leading/lagging
• Hedging with exotic options and structured products
• Case study: hedging a multinational's cash flows

Day 4: International Financial Environment in Practice

Objectives:
• Analyse the impact of macroeconomic policies on international finance.
• Assess the role of international financial institutions and regulatory bodies.
• Integrate knowledge to evaluate real-world scenarios and make informed decisions.
• Demonstrate understanding of ethical and compliance considerations.

Topics:
• Macroeconomic policy coordination and exchange rate systems
• Role of IMF, World Bank, and BIS
• Regulatory frameworks: Basel Accords, FATF, and local regulations
• Sovereign risk and country risk analysis
• Ethical issues in international finance: money laundering, corruption
• Practical workshop: analysing a country's financial environment
• Group exercise: developing a risk management strategy for a multinational
• Review and assessment of learning outcomes

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
