Fault Find And Repair Specialised Sensing Devices Training

SAQA US 119810 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to fault find and repair specialised sensing devices, including transducers, sensors, and detectors used in industrial and commercial applications. Participants will learn systematic diagnostic techniques and repair procedures to ensure operational reliability and compliance with safety standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply systematic fault-finding techniques to diagnose malfunctions in specialised sensing devices.
  • Analyse circuit diagrams and technical specifications to identify potential causes of sensor failure.
  • Evaluate the performance of sensing devices using appropriate test equipment and procedures.
  • Implement repair and replacement procedures for faulty components in sensing devices.
  • Demonstrate compliance with occupational health and safety regulations during fault finding and repair activities.
  • Document fault-finding and repair processes according to organisational and industry standards.

Target Audience

This course is intended for technicians, engineers, and maintenance personnel responsible for the installation, calibration, fault finding, and repair of specialised sensing devices in manufacturing, process control, and automation environments.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Specialised Sensing Devices

Objectives:
• Identify and classify specialised sensing devices used in industrial applications
• Explain the operating principles of common sensors (proximity, photoelectric, ultrasonic)
• Interpret sensor specifications and datasheets
• Apply safety procedures when working with sensing devices

Topics:
• Introduction to specialised sensing devices: types and applications
• Operating principles: inductive, capacitive, photoelectric, ultrasonic sensors
• Sensor characteristics: range, resolution, accuracy, response time
• Reading and interpreting datasheets and manufacturer specifications
• Safety protocols: lockout/tagout, electrical safety, handling precautions

Day 2: Fault Finding Techniques and Diagnostic Tools

Objectives:
• Use diagnostic tools (multimeter, oscilloscope, calibration equipment) to test sensors
• Apply systematic fault-finding methods (input-to-output, half-split, substitution)
• Identify common sensor faults: wiring issues, contamination, misalignment, signal drift
• Document fault-finding procedures and findings according to industry standards

Topics:
• Diagnostic tools: multimeter, oscilloscope, signal generators, calibrators
• Systematic fault-finding approaches: visual inspection, functional testing, signal tracing
• Common faults: cable damage, power supply issues, environmental interference
• Practical exercises: diagnosing faulty proximity, photoelectric, and ultrasonic sensors
• Documentation: fault reports, test results, and corrective actions

Day 3: Repair, Calibration, and System Integration

Objectives:
• Perform repairs and replacements on faulty sensing devices
• Calibrate sensors to manufacturer specifications
• Integrate repaired sensors into control systems and verify functionality
• Apply quality assurance and final testing procedures

Topics:
• Repair techniques: component replacement, soldering, connector refurbishment
• Calibration procedures: zero and span adjustments, sensitivity settings
• System integration: connecting sensors to PLCs, DCS, or SCADA systems
• Verification testing: functional tests, repeatability checks, output validation
• Quality assurance: final inspection, compliance with standards, handover documentation

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
