This course equips learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to collect, handle, and analyze water samples for quality testing. Participants will learn to apply standard methods for physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis, ensuring compliance with South African water quality standards and regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Water Sampling and Quality Testing

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of water quality testing and relevant legislation
• Identify different types of water sources and their potential contaminants
• Describe the principles of representative sampling and sample preservation
• Explain the basic parameters measured in water quality analysis
• Apply proper sampling techniques for routine water quality monitoring

Topics:
• Introduction to water quality: sources, uses, and contamination pathways
• South African water quality legislation and standards (SANS 241, DWAF guidelines)
• Types of water samples: grab, composite, and passive sampling
• Sampling equipment: bottles, samplers, and field meters
• Sample preservation, handling, and chain of custody
• Physical parameters: temperature, turbidity, pH, conductivity
• Chemical parameters: dissolved oxygen, hardness, alkalinity
• Microbiological indicators: total coliforms, E. coli

Day 2: Sampling Procedures and Field Analysis Techniques

Objectives:
• Develop a site-specific sampling plan with quality control measures
• Demonstrate correct sampling procedures for various water sources
• Perform field measurements of key water quality parameters
• Interpret field test results and identify potential issues
• Apply decontamination protocols to prevent cross-contamination

Topics:
• Sampling plan development: frequency, locations, and parameters
• Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) in sampling
• Surface water sampling: rivers, dams, and streams
• Groundwater sampling: boreholes and wells
• Wastewater and effluent sampling techniques
• Field analysis: pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity meters
• Field test kits: chlorine residual, hardness, iron, nitrate
• Sample labeling, preservation, and transport to laboratory

Day 3: Laboratory Analysis, Data Interpretation, and Reporting

Objectives:
• Perform basic laboratory analyses for common water quality parameters
• Interpret analytical results against regulatory standards
• Identify potential sources of error and implement corrective actions
• Prepare a comprehensive water quality report
• Apply knowledge to real-world scenarios and problem-solving

Topics:
• Laboratory safety and good laboratory practice (GLP)
• Titrimetric analysis: alkalinity, hardness, chloride
• Spectrophotometric analysis: ammonia, phosphate, nitrate
• Microbiological analysis: membrane filtration, multiple tube fermentation
• Quality control: blanks, duplicates, spikes, and control samples
• Data validation and interpretation using SANS 241 limits
• Report writing: format, data presentation, and recommendations
• Case studies: common water quality issues and troubleshooting

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop competence in water sampling and field/laboratory analysis. These sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge, practice correct techniques, and gain confidence in using equipment and interpreting results.

Practical Activities
  • Field Sampling and In-Situ Measurements — Learners visit a nearby water source (e.g., river, dam, or borehole) to practice grab sampling, measure field parameters (pH, temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity) using handheld meters, and properly label and preserve samples. (4h)
  • Laboratory Analysis of Physical and Chemical Parameters — In the laboratory, learners analyze collected water samples for physical parameters (turbidity, conductivity) and chemical parameters (alkalinity, hardness, chloride, ammonia) using titration, spectrophotometry, and other standard methods. (4h)
  • Microbiological Analysis and Data Interpretation — Learners conduct membrane filtration for total coliforms and E. coli, incubate samples, and interpret results. They then compile a full water quality report comparing results to SANS 241 standards and discuss corrective actions. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
