Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Carpentry Finishing Components and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of carpentry finishing components in construction.
• Identify relevant safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Explain the role of unit standard 119066 in competency development.
• Describe the basic tools and materials used in finishing work.

Topics:
• Overview of carpentry finishing components (skirtings, architraves, cornices, etc.)
• Health and safety legislation (OHSA) and site-specific safety protocols
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe tool handling
• Introduction to hand and power tools for finishing
• Material types: timber, MDF, PVC, and composites
• Quality standards and specifications in finishing

Day 2: Reading and Interpreting Drawings and Specifications

Objectives:
• Interpret architectural drawings and specifications for finishing components.
• Identify symbols, dimensions, and notations relevant to carpentry finishes.
• Calculate quantities and plan material requirements.
• Apply measurement techniques for accurate layout.

Topics:
• Reading floor plans, elevations, and sections
• Understanding specifications for finishes (materials, profiles, fixing methods)
• Symbols and abbreviations used in carpentry drawings
• Taking off quantities and estimating material needs
• Measuring and marking out using tapes, squares, and levels
• Recording measurements and creating cutting lists

Day 3: Selecting and Preparing Materials for Finishing

Objectives:
• Select appropriate materials based on specifications and site conditions.
• Inspect materials for defects and ensure quality.
• Prepare materials by cutting, planing, and sanding to required dimensions.
• Apply principles of material conservation and waste minimisation.

• Criteria for material selection (species, grade, moisture content)
• Inspection techniques for timber and manufactured boards
• Defects in timber (knots, splits, warping) and rejection criteria
• Cutting techniques using circular saws, mitre saws, and hand saws
• Planing and sanding for smooth finishes
• Storage and handling of materials on site

Day 4: Fixing Methods and Fasteners for Finishing Components

Objectives:
• Identify various fixing methods and fasteners used in finishing.
• Select appropriate adhesives, nails, screws, and brackets.
• Demonstrate correct fixing techniques for different substrates.
• Understand load-bearing considerations and fixing centres.

Topics:
• Types of fixings: nails (lost head, oval, etc.), screws, and proprietary clips
• Adhesives: contact adhesive, PVA, construction adhesive
• Fixing to masonry, timber, and metal stud walls
• Use of plugs, anchors, and wall plugs
• Spacing and centres for skirtings, architraves, and cornices
• Safety considerations when using fixings (pre-drilling, pilot holes)

Day 5: Installing Skirtings and Baseboards

Objectives:
• Measure, cut, and install skirtings to walls with internal and external corners.
• Apply scribing techniques for uneven floors and walls.
• Join lengths using scarf joints and mitre joints.
• Ensure level and plumb installation with consistent gaps.

• Setting out skirtings: datum lines and floor level references
• Cutting internal and external mitres
• Scribing to uneven surfaces
• Scarf joints for long runs
• Fixing methods: nailing, screwing, and adhesive
• Dealing with door frames and obstacles
• Quality checks: gaps, alignment, and finish

Day 6: Installing Architraves and Door Casings

Objectives:
• Measure and cut architraves for doors and windows.
• Form mitred and butt joints at corners.
• Fit architraves flush to frames and walls.
• Install door casings with proper reveals and packings.

Topics:
• Types of architrave profiles (bullnose, chamfered, ogee)
• Setting out architraves around door frames
• Cutting mitres for square and splayed corners
• Jointing techniques: mitre, scribe, and butt joints
• Fixing architraves: nailing and pinning
• Installing door casings: plumb, square, and twist-free
• Adjusting reveals and using packers

Day 7: Installing Cornices and Coving

Objectives:
• Measure and cut cornices for internal and external corners.
• Use mitre boxes or power tools for accurate angles.
• Apply adhesive and fix cornices to walls and ceilings.
• Fill and finish joints for seamless appearance.

• Cornice profiles (gypsum, timber, polyurethane)
• Calculating lengths and coping with corners
• Cutting internal and external mitres for cornices
• Using a mitre saw or mitre box
• Adhesive application and fixing sequence
• Internal and external corner joints

Day 8: Installing Window Boards and Sills

Objectives:
• Measure and cut window boards to fit reveals.
• Install with proper fall (slope) for water runoff.
• Secure boards using adhesive and mechanical fixings.
• Seal joints between board and window frame.

• Types of window boards (timber, composite, stone)
• Measuring reveals and accounting for overhang
• Cutting to length and width with appropriate tools
• Creating fall (pitch) for external sills
• Fixing methods: screws, adhesive, or combination
• Sealing with silicone or mastic
• Finishing edges and nosings
• Quality checks: level, fall, and alignment

Day 9: Installing Shelving and Cupboard Trims

Objectives:
• Install shelving brackets and shelves to specifications.
• Fit cupboard trims, including pelmets and end panels.
• Ensure shelves are level and securely fixed.
• Apply finishing touches such as edging strips.

• Types of shelving systems (adjustable, fixed, cantilever)
• Marking out and drilling for brackets
• Installing shelf supports and shelves
• Cupboard trims: pelmets, cornices, and plinths
• Fitting end panels and scribing to walls
• Edging strips and lipping for exposed edges

Day 10: Installing Handrails and Balustrades

Objectives:
• Measure and cut handrails to required lengths and angles.
• Install handrails on brackets or directly to walls.
• Fit balustrades with spindles, newels, and handrails.
• Ensure compliance with building regulations (height, spacing).

• Building regulations for handrails and balustrades
• Types of handrails (timber, metal, composite)
• Measuring and cutting handrails for stairs and landings
• Fixing brackets and wall attachments
• Installing newel posts and fixing methods
• Spacing and installing spindles (balusters)

Day 11: Quality Control, Defects, and Remedial Work

Objectives:
• Inspect installed components for defects and compliance.
• Identify common installation errors and their causes.
• Perform remedial work such as filling, sanding, and refixing.
• Apply finishing techniques (filling nail holes, sealing).

• Quality checklist for finishing components
• Common defects: gaps, misalignment, loose fixings, damage
• Tools for remedial work: filler, sandpaper, touch-up paint
• Techniques for filling nail holes and joint gaps
• Sanding and preparing surfaces for paint or polish
• Re-fixing loose components

Day 12: Integration, Assessment, and Practical Project

Objectives:
• Integrate all skills in a practical installation project.
• Complete a set of finishing components to specification.
• Demonstrate safe working practices throughout.
• Undergo final assessment and receive feedback.

• Briefing for practical project (e.g., room with skirtings, architraves, cornice)
• Planning and material take-off
• Installation of multiple components in sequence
• Time management and teamwork

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
