Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Aggregate Materials and Sampling

Objectives:
• Understand the role of aggregates in construction and the importance of quality testing.
• Identify different types of aggregates and their sources.
• Explain sampling methods and procedures according to SANS standards.
• Demonstrate correct sample preparation techniques.
• Apply safety protocols in the laboratory environment.

• Overview of aggregate materials: natural vs. manufactured.
• Significance of aggregate testing in construction.
• Relevant SANS and TMH standards for aggregate testing.
• Sampling techniques: bulk sampling, reduction, and splitting.
• Sample preparation: drying, sieving, and conditioning.

Day 2: Particle Size Distribution and Sieve Analysis

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of particle size distribution in aggregate performance.
• Perform sieve analysis for coarse and fine aggregates.
• Calculate and interpret grading curves and fineness modulus.
• Evaluate compliance with specification limits.
• Identify common errors in sieve analysis.

• Theory of particle size distribution.
• Sieve analysis procedure for coarse aggregates (SANS 3001-AG1).
• Sieve analysis procedure for fine aggregates (SANS 3001-AG2).
• Plotting grading curves and determining fineness modulus.

Day 3: Relative Density and Water Absorption

Objectives:
• Define relative density and water absorption and their relevance.
• Determine relative density and water absorption for coarse aggregates.
• Determine relative density and water absorption for fine aggregates.
• Calculate and report results accurately.
• Relate these properties to concrete mix design.

• Concepts of relative density (specific gravity) and water absorption.
• Test method for coarse aggregates (SANS 3001-AG20).
• Test method for fine aggregates (SANS 3001-AG21).
• Use of pycnometers and balances.
• Calculations and corrections for temperature.
• Application in mix design and quality control.

Day 4: Aggregate Crushing, Impact, and Abrasion Tests

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of aggregate strength and durability.
• Perform the Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) test.
• Perform the Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) test.
• Perform the Los Angeles Abrasion test.
• Interpret results in relation to material suitability.

• Mechanical properties of aggregates: strength and toughness.
• ACV test procedure (SANS 3001-AG10).
• AIV test procedure (SANS 3001-AG11).
• Los Angeles Abrasion test (SANS 3001-AG12).
• Reporting and interpretation of results.

Day 5: Flakiness Index, Elongation Index, and Shape Tests

Objectives:
• Explain the effect of particle shape on aggregate performance.
• Determine flakiness index for coarse aggregates.
• Determine elongation index for coarse aggregates.
• Perform angularity and shape tests.
• Assess the impact of shape on concrete and asphalt.

Topics:
• Significance of particle shape and texture.
• Flakiness index test (SANS 3001-AG4).
• Elongation index test (SANS 3001-AG5).
• Angularity test for fine aggregates (uncompacted void content).
• Interpretation of shape indices.
• Influence on workability, strength, and compaction.

Day 6: Organic Impurities, Clay Lumps, and Deleterious Materials

Objectives:
• Identify common deleterious materials in aggregates.
• Perform tests for organic impurities (colorimetric test).
• Determine clay lumps and friable particles content.
• Conduct tests for lightweight particles and other contaminants.
• Evaluate the impact of impurities on concrete durability.

• Overview of deleterious substances in aggregates.
• Organic impurities test (SANS 3001-AG30).
• Clay lumps and friable particles test (SANS 3001-AG31).
• Lightweight particles test (SANS 3001-AG32).
• Soundness test (sodium sulfate or magnesium sulfate).

Day 7: Practical Integration, Data Analysis, and Certification

Objectives:
• Integrate all test methods in a simulated testing scenario.
• Analyze and interpret a complete set of aggregate test results.
• Prepare a comprehensive test report conforming to standards.
• Apply corrective actions for out-of-specification results.
• Demonstrate competence in laboratory testing procedures.

• Hands-on practical session: complete aggregate testing suite.
• Data analysis and correlation between different tests.
• Report writing: format, calculations, and conclusions.
• Quality assurance and inter-laboratory comparisons.
• Common non-conformances and troubleshooting.
• Review of unit standard outcomes and assessment preparation.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
