Mini Substation Installation And Ring Main Unit Replacement Training

SAQA US 113891 | NQF 3 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely install mini substations and replace ring main units (RMUs) in accordance with South African standards. It covers electrical safety, installation procedures, testing, and commissioning to ensure reliable and compliant power distribution.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply relevant safety regulations and procedures when working on mini substations and ring main units.
  • Analyze site conditions and electrical load requirements to determine appropriate mini substation specifications.
  • Demonstrate correct installation techniques for mini substations, including earthing, cabling, and terminations.
  • Perform safe isolation, removal, and replacement of ring main units following manufacturer guidelines.
  • Test and commission installed equipment to verify functionality and compliance with standards.
  • Evaluate potential hazards and implement risk mitigation measures during installation and replacement activities.

Target Audience

Electrical technicians, engineers, and maintenance personnel involved in the installation, maintenance, or replacement of mini substations and ring main units in industrial, commercial, or utility settings.

• Identify safety requirements and regulatory standards for installation
• Explain the operating principles of RMUs and switchgear
• Describe the sequence of installation activities
• Recognise common tools and equipment used

Topics:
• Overview of mini substations: types, applications, and components
• Introduction to ring main units: function, configurations, and ratings
• Electrical safety principles: lockout/tagout, PPE, and safe working distances
• Relevant regulations: SANS 10142-1, OHS Act, and Eskom standards
• Tools and equipment: cable preparation tools, torque wrenches, testing instruments
• Pre-installation site assessment: civil works, cable routing, and access

Day 2: Installation Procedures and Cable Termination

Objectives:
• Execute step-by-step installation of a mini substation
• Perform cable termination and jointing for HV and LV cables

• Ring main unit replacement: isolation, removal, and installation of new RMU
• Earthing system installation: earth electrodes, conductors, and bonding
• Testing and commissioning: insulation resistance, phase rotation, and functionality checks
• Documentation: as-built drawings, test reports, and handover certificates

Day 3: Fault Finding, Maintenance, and Safety Integration

Objectives:
• Diagnose common faults in mini substations and RMUs
• Perform routine maintenance tasks and inspections
• Apply troubleshooting techniques using test equipment
• Implement emergency procedures for electrical incidents
• Complete a full installation and replacement practical exercise

Topics:
• Fault finding methodology: visual inspection, testing, and interpretation of results
• Common faults: cable insulation breakdown, switchgear failures, and earthing issues
• Maintenance schedules: cleaning, lubrication, contact resistance measurement
• Emergency response: arc flash, electric shock, and fire procedures
• Integration of safety during replacement: switching procedures and permits to work
• Final practical assessment: install mini substation and replace RMU

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals are essential for learners to gain hands-on experience in installing mini substations and replacing ring main units. Supervised practice ensures safe application of theoretical knowledge, including cable termination, testing, and fault finding. Learners will demonstrate competence in real-world scenarios under qualified instructor guidance.

Practical Activities
  • Safe Isolation and Preparation — Learners practice isolating a live mini substation, applying lockout/tagout, and preparing the site for installation. (2h)
  • Cable Termination and Earthing — Learners strip, terminate, and gland HV and LV cables, and install earthing conductors. (3h)
  • Mini Substation Installation — Learners install a mini substation including enclosure positioning, switchgear mounting, and cable connections. (3h)
  • Ring Main Unit Replacement — Learners replace an existing RMU with a new unit, ensuring correct phasing and operation. (2h)
  • Fault Finding and Commissioning — Learners troubleshoot simulated faults and complete commissioning tests. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
