Day 1: Introduction to Disaster Impact Assessment

Objectives:

• Describe the disaster management cycle and where impact assessment fits

Day 2: Disaster Risk Assessment Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and components of disaster risk assessment
• Differentiate between qualitative, quantitative, and semi-quantitative risk assessment methods
• Apply risk assessment frameworks to case studies
• Identify data sources for risk assessment

• Risk assessment frameworks: ISO 31000, COSO, and South African guidelines

Day 3: Hazard Identification and Analysis

Overview

The practicals component provides hands-on experience in data collection, GIS mapping, impact estimation, and report writing. Learners apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, using tools and methods covered in the course.

Practical Activities
  • Hazard Mapping and Exposure Data Collection — Learners collect exposure data (building footprints, population density) for a selected area using field surveys and secondary sources, then create hazard maps using GIS. (8h)
  • Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment — Learners conduct a participatory vulnerability assessment with a simulated community group, applying vulnerability indicators and identifying local capacities. (8h)
  • Impact Estimation using Risk Models — Learners use risk modeling software (e.g., InaSAFE) to estimate direct and indirect impacts for a flood scenario, analyzing damage to buildings and infrastructure. (8h)
  • Comprehensive Impact Assessment and Reporting — Learners integrate data from previous practicals into a full impact assessment report, including hazard analysis, exposure, vulnerability, and impact estimates, and present to a simulated panel. (12h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
