This course equips learners with the competence to develop comprehensive strategies and operational plans for disaster risk reduction. Day 1: Introduction to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Concepts

• Differentiate between hazards, vulnerability, and risk.
• Recognise the importance of DRR in the South African context.

• The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
• Key concepts: hazard, exposure, vulnerability, capacity.
• Disaster risk management vs. disaster risk reduction.

Day 2: Risk Assessment Methodologies

Objectives:
• Describe different risk assessment approaches.
• Conduct a basic hazard identification and risk analysis.
• Use risk matrices to prioritise risks.
• Understand the role of data in risk assessment.

• Qualitative vs. quantitative risk assessment.
• Hazard identification techniques (checklists, brainstorming).
• Vulnerability and capacity analysis.

Day 3: Stakeholder Engagement and Participation

Day 4: Disaster Risk Reduction Strategies

• Evaluate cost-benefit of interventions.
• Integrate DRR into development planning.

Day 5: Planning Frameworks and Policy Alignment

• Use the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) process for DRR.

Day 6: Developing a Disaster Risk Reduction Plan (Part 1)

Day 7: Developing a Disaster Risk Reduction Plan (Part 2)

Objectives:
• Draft action plans with timelines and responsibilities.

• Conduct a plan review with stakeholders.
• Finalise a draft DRR plan.

Day 8: Early Warning Systems and Communication

• Technology for early warning (SMS, sirens, apps).

Day 9: Capacity Building and Training

• Identify capacity gaps for DRR implementation.

Day 10: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning

Day 12: Final Plan Presentation and Course Review

• Present the draft DRR plan to peers and facilitators.
• Receive and incorporate feedback.
• Review key learning outcomes.
• Develop an action plan for implementation.

• Peer review and constructive feedback.
• Finalising the DRR plan.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
