Fire-Ground Operations for Life Safety and Fire Control Training

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate the correct use of fire-fighting personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
• Apply techniques for fire suppression, including hose line deployment, nozzle operation, and extinguisher use.
• Perform systematic search and rescue operations to locate and evacuate occupants from fire-affected structures.
• Evaluate fire behavior indicators to predict fire spread and identify hazards for life safety.
• Implement property conservation measures, including salvage and overhaul procedures, to minimize damage.
• Communicate effectively with team members and incident command during fire-ground operations.

Target Audience

This course is designed for firefighters, fire-fighting trainees, and emergency response personnel who need to perform fire-ground operations under supervision in municipal, industrial, or wildland settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners must be physically fit and able to perform strenuous activities in a training environment.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

The practicals component reinforces theoretical knowledge through hands-on drills in PPE/SCBA use, search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, fire attack, and incident command. Learners perform supervised evolutions at a training facility, culminating in a simulated structure fire scenario.

Practical Activities

• PPE and SCBA Drills — Learners don full PPE and SCBA, perform air consumption exercises, and navigate obstacle courses in zero visibility. (4h)
• Search and Rescue Evolutions — Teams conduct primary and secondary searches in a smoke-filled training structure, locate victims, and perform drags and carries. (4h)
• Forcible Entry and Ventilation — Learners apply forcible entry techniques on various doors and windows, and perform vertical and horizontal ventilation on a training prop. (4h)
• Fire Attack and Stream Management — Teams advance charged hoselines into a live-fire training structure, apply water streams for fire control, and conduct overhaul. (6h)
• Command and Tactical Simulation — Learners assume ICS roles in a simulated structure fire scenario, managing resources, communications, and tactical operations. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
