This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and mitigate business risks within a South African corporate context. Participants will learn to develop and implement risk management strategies that align with organisational objectives and regulatory requirements.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply risk assessment techniques, including qualitative and quantitative methods, to evaluate risk likelihood and impact.

  • Design a risk management plan that includes risk response actions, monitoring mechanisms, and communication protocols.
  • Implement risk mitigation strategies and monitor their effectiveness using key risk indicators.

This course is designed for managers, team leaders, and professionals responsible for risk management, compliance, or operational continuity in their organisations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should have basic business acumen and be employed in a role that involves decision-making or operational oversight.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Risk Management

Objectives:
• Define risk and risk management in a business context
• Explain the importance of risk management for organisational success
• Identify the key principles of risk management according to ISO 31000
• Describe the role of a risk management framework
• Outline the regulatory and legislative context in South Africa

• What is risk? Types of business risks
• The business case for risk management
• Overview of ISO 31000 and COSO frameworks
• South African legislation: OHSA, King IV, Companies Act
• The risk management process: identify, analyse, evaluate, treat, monitor

Day 2: Risk Identification Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply various risk identification tools and techniques
• Conduct a risk identification session using brainstorming and checklists
• Use SWOT analysis to identify risks
• Identify risks from historical data and incident reports
• Document risks in a risk register

• Brainstorming, Delphi technique, interviews
• SWOT and PESTLE analysis
• Checklists and industry-specific risk libraries
• Scenario analysis and what-if analysis

Day 3: Risk Analysis and Evaluation

Objectives:
• Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative risk analysis
• Apply a risk rating matrix to prioritise risks
• Calculate risk scores based on likelihood and impact
• Interpret risk levels and determine risk appetite
• Use risk evaluation to decide on treatment priorities

Day 4: Risk Treatment Strategies

• Evaluate cost-benefit of treatment options
• Implement control measures: preventive, detective, corrective
• Assign risk owners and timelines

Day 5: Operational Risk Management

Objectives:

• Develop key risk indicators (KRIs) for operations

Day 6: Financial Risk Management

Objectives:
• Identify financial risks: credit, liquidity, market, currency
• Use hedging techniques to mitigate financial risk

• Implement credit risk policies
• Monitor financial risk exposure

Day 7: Strategic and Reputational Risk

Day 9: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery

Objectives:
• Explain the relationship between risk management and business continuity
• Develop a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)
• Conduct a Business Impact Analysis (BIA)
• Create a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)
• Test and maintain continuity plans

Day 10: Risk Monitoring and Reporting

Day 11: Risk Culture and Governance

• Assess current risk culture within the organisation

• Risk culture assessment tools and surveys
• Building a risk-aware culture: training, incentives, communication

Day 12: Integrated Risk Management and Capstone

Objectives:
• Synthesise all risk management elements into an integrated framework
• Develop a comprehensive risk management plan for a case study
• Present and defend risk treatment recommendations
• Evaluate the effectiveness of risk management processes
• Create a personal action plan for applying learning

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
