Learning Outcomes

• Apply the principles of primary and secondary survey to assess an emergency scene and casualties.
• Demonstrate the correct techniques for performing CPR on adults, children, and infants, including the use of an AED.
• Evaluate and manage a range of medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest, choking, anaphylaxis, and seizures.
• Implement appropriate first aid procedures for traumatic injuries, such as bleeding, fractures, burns, and spinal injuries.
• Analyze environmental emergencies and provide effective first aid for heatstroke, hypothermia, and poisoning.
• Design and implement an emergency action plan for a workplace or community setting.

Target Audience

This course is ideal for workplace safety representatives, emergency response team members, supervisors, and any individuals seeking to enhance their first aid skills. It is also suitable for those required to hold a first aid certification as part of their job role.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a reasonable level of physical fitness is recommended as practical assessments may involve kneeling, bending, and performing CPR.

Practicals

Overview

The practical component is essential for developing hands-on skills in first aid. Learners will practice CPR, wound care, splinting, and emergency response in simulated scenarios, ensuring they can apply their knowledge effectively in real-life situations.

Practical Activities

• Basic Life Support and AED Practice — Learners practice adult, child, and infant CPR on mannequins, use an AED trainer, and manage choking incidents. (8h)
• Wound Care and Bleeding Control Workshop — Learners practice applying pressure, dressings, and tourniquets on simulated wounds, and learn proper wound cleaning techniques. (8h)
• Splinting and Immobilization Practical — Learners practice applying splints to upper and lower extremities using both rigid and improvised materials, and manage soft tissue injuries. (8h)
• Medical Emergency Scenario Simulations — Learners participate in simulated medical emergencies such as anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, and seizures, practicing assessment and management. (8h)
• Environmental and Multi-Casualty Incident Drill — Learners engage in a simulated environmental emergency (e.g., heat stroke, snakebite) and a multi-casualty incident, applying triage and prioritization. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

How it works

• Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
• Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
• You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
• If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
