API 579 Fitness-for-Service Training

Learning Outcomes

• Apply the API 579 FFS assessment procedures to identify and categorize damage mechanisms and flaws.
• Analyze the fitness-for-service of components using Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 assessment methods.
• Evaluate the remaining strength and remaining life of equipment using appropriate assessment techniques.
• Design a risk-based inspection and maintenance plan based on FFS assessment results.
• Demonstrate the ability to document and report FFS assessments in accordance with API 579 standards.
• Implement FFS assessments to support run-repair-replace decisions and regulatory compliance.

Target Audience

Engineers, integrity specialists, inspectors, and maintenance managers involved in the assessment and management of pressure equipment, piping systems, and storage tanks in the oil, gas, petrochemical, and power generation industries.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a background in engineering or a related technical field is recommended.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in applying API 579 assessment procedures to realistic inspection data. Learners will use calculation tools and software to perform Level 1 and Level 2 assessments, interpret results, and make run-repair-replace decisions.

Practical Activities

• Metal Loss Assessment — Learners will use provided inspection data (wall thickness readings) to perform a Level 1 and Level 2 assessment of generalized metal loss on a pressure vessel. (3h)
• Crack-Like Flaw Assessment — Learners will evaluate a crack-like flaw in a cylinder using the Failure Assessment Diagram (FAD) approach from API 579 Part 9. (3h)
• Pitting Corrosion Assessment — Learners will assess pitting corrosion on a pipe using the criteria in API 579 Part 6, including pit density and remaining strength calculations. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate
