Battery Storage System Design Training

SAQA US AATICD-0495 | NQF 5 | Credits 4 | Duration 2 Days
From $610 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to design efficient and safe battery storage systems for residential, commercial, and utility-scale applications. It covers system architecture, component selection, safety standards, and performance optimization, enabling learners to produce compliant and cost-effective designs.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply fundamental principles of battery chemistry and operation to select appropriate battery technologies for specific applications.
  • Analyze load profiles and energy requirements to size battery storage capacity and power ratings accurately.
  • Design battery storage system architectures, including series/parallel configurations, BMS integration, and protection devices.
  • Evaluate safety standards and regulatory requirements to ensure designs meet South African and international codes.
  • Implement thermal management and ventilation strategies to maintain battery performance and longevity.
  • Demonstrate economic and environmental benefits of proposed designs through lifecycle cost and carbon footprint analysis.

Target Audience

This course is ideal for electrical engineers, renewable energy technicians, project managers, and technical sales professionals involved in the design, installation, or maintenance of battery energy storage systems.

Prerequisites

A basic understanding of electrical principles and familiarity with renewable energy systems is recommended. No formal qualification is required.

Course Outline

• Describe safety considerations and regulatory requirements

Topics:
• Introduction to battery energy storage systems (BESS)
• Battery chemistries: lead-acid, lithium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging technologies
• Electrical parameters: voltage, current, capacity, state of charge (SoC), depth of discharge (DoD)
• Performance metrics: round-trip efficiency, cycle life, degradation
• Safety standards and regulations (SANS, IEC)
• System components: BMS, inverters, thermal management, enclosures
• Site assessment and system sizing fundamentals

Day 2: Design, Integration, and Practical Applications

Objectives:
• Apply design principles to size battery storage systems for various applications
• Integrate battery storage with renewable energy sources and grid
• Evaluate economic and environmental considerations
• Develop operational and maintenance strategies

Topics:
• System design methodology: load analysis, solar yield, battery sizing
• Applications: peak shaving, load shifting, backup power, grid services
• Integration with PV systems and grid connection requirements
• Protection and control strategies
• Economic analysis: cost-benefit, payback, ROI
• Environmental impact and recycling
• Commissioning, monitoring, and maintenance planning

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practical sessions are essential for learners to apply design concepts in a hands-on environment. They will use simulation tools and physical components to size, assemble, and test a small-scale battery storage system, reinforcing theoretical knowledge.

Practical Activities
  • Battery Sizing and Simulation — Learners use spreadsheet-based tools or software to size a battery bank for a given load profile and solar generation data. (2h)
  • Battery Bank Assembly and Wiring — In small groups, learners physically assemble a battery bank using provided cells, connect them in series/parallel, and wire the system to a load. (2h)
  • BMS and System Testing — Learners connect a battery management system (BMS) to the assembled bank, configure settings, and perform charge/discharge tests while monitoring parameters. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
