Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage Training

SAQA US AATICD-0532 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $713 per delegate

Description

The purpose of this course is to equip professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies, enabling them to contribute to South Africa's climate change mitigation efforts. Participants will gain an understanding of the technical, economic, and regulatory aspects of CCUS, and how to integrate these solutions into industrial operations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of carbon capture technologies, including post-combustion, pre-combustion, and oxy-fuel combustion capture.
  • Analyse the various methods of carbon utilisation, such as enhanced oil recovery, mineral carbonation, and conversion to chemicals and fuels.
  • Evaluate the geological storage options for CO2, including saline aquifers and depleted oil and gas reservoirs, and assess their suitability.
  • Design a basic CCUS project plan, considering technical feasibility, economic viability, and environmental impact.
  • Implement monitoring, verification, and accounting (MRV) procedures for CO2 storage sites.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the regulatory and policy frameworks governing CCUS in South Africa and internationally.

Target Audience

This course is designed for environmental engineers, energy managers, sustainability consultants, policy makers, and technical professionals in the energy, mining, and manufacturing sectors who are involved in or seeking to understand CCUS projects.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment, though a basic understanding of environmental science or engineering is beneficial.

Day 3: Utilisation, Integration, and Future Directions

Objectives:
• Explore the diverse pathways for CO2 utilisation and their market potential.
• Understand the principles of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) in producing valuable products.
• Examine the integration of CCUS with hydrogen production and other low-carbon technologies.
• Develop strategies for implementing CCUS projects, including financing, public acceptance, and policy support.

Topics:
• CO2 utilisation: chemicals (methanol, urea), fuels (methane, jet fuel), and building materials (carbonates)
• Biological utilisation: algae and microorganism-based processes
• Mineral carbonation and enhanced weathering
• CCUS and green hydrogen: synergies and co-production
• Negative emissions technologies: BECCS and DACCS
• Project development: feasibility studies, financing, and risk mitigation
• Public perception, stakeholder engagement, and communication
• Future trends and innovations in CCUS

Practicals

10 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with key CCUS processes, including simulation of capture, measurement of CO2 properties, and evaluation of storage site data. Learners will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their technical competence.

Practical Activities
  • Simulation of CO2 Capture Process — Using process simulation software (e.g., Aspen Plus or similar), learners will model a post-combustion capture unit and analyse the effects of different solvents and operating conditions on capture efficiency and energy consumption. (4h)
  • CO2 Properties and Measurement Lab — In a laboratory setting, learners will measure physical properties of CO2 (density, viscosity) under varying pressures and temperatures, and calibrate CO2 sensors used in monitoring. (3h)
  • Storage Site Selection and Risk Assessment Exercise — Using real geological data from a South African basin, learners will assess a potential storage site, estimate capacity, and conduct a basic risk assessment for leakage. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
