Advanced Energy Management Systems Training

SAQA US AATICD-0562 | NQF 5 | Credits 4 | Duration 2 Days
From $610 per delegate

Description

This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to design, implement, and manage advanced energy management systems in line with international standards and South African regulatory requirements. It focuses on optimizing energy performance, reducing costs, and enhancing sustainability within organizations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of energy management systems (EnMS) to develop an organizational energy policy and strategy.
  • Analyze energy data and conduct energy reviews to identify significant energy uses and improvement opportunities.
  • Design and implement energy management action plans, including setting objectives, targets, and performance indicators.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of an EnMS through monitoring, measurement, and internal audits, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant legislation, standards (e.g., ISO 50001), and best practices in energy management.

Target Audience

This course is designed for energy managers, facilities managers, engineers, sustainability officers, and operations professionals who are responsible for energy performance and efficiency in their organizations.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Energy Management Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the principles and benefits of energy management systems (EnMS)
• Identify key stakeholders and their roles in energy management
• Explain the ISO 50001 framework and its requirements
• Conduct a basic energy review and establish an energy baseline
• Apply energy performance indicators (EnPIs) to track progress

Topics:
• Introduction to energy management and its importance
• Overview of ISO 50001 and other relevant standards
• Energy policy and management commitment
• Energy planning: legal requirements, energy review, baseline
• Energy performance indicators (EnPIs) and measurement
• Roles and responsibilities of an energy management team
• Communication and training for energy awareness

Day 2: Advanced Implementation and Optimization

Objectives:
• Develop and implement an action plan for energy performance improvement
• Apply advanced techniques for monitoring and targeting (M&T)
• Evaluate energy performance using statistical analysis and CUSUM
• Identify and prioritize energy-saving opportunities using life cycle cost analysis
• Integrate EnMS with other management systems for continuous improvement

Topics:
• Energy action planning and implementation
• Monitoring and targeting (M&T) techniques
• Statistical analysis of energy data: regression, CUSUM
• Life cycle cost analysis for energy projects
• Energy audits and measurement & verification (M&V)
• Integration of EnMS with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001
• Continual improvement and management review

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with energy data collection, analysis, and the use of tools for monitoring and targeting. Learners will apply ISO 50001 concepts to a simulated scenario, reinforcing the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.

Practical Activities
  • Energy Data Collection and Baseline Establishment — Learners will work with sample energy consumption data to establish a baseline and calculate EnPIs. (2h)
  • Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) with Excel — Using Excel, learners will perform regression analysis and create CUSUM charts to monitor energy performance. (2h)
  • Energy Action Plan Simulation — In groups, learners will develop an energy action plan for a case study, including prioritization of measures and setting targets. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
