Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Human Resources Management

Objectives:
• Understand the role and importance of HR in organisations
• Identify key HR functions and their interrelationships
• Recognise the legal framework governing HR practices in South Africa
• Explain the concept of human capital and its value

• Definition and scope of Human Resources Management
• Evolution of HR: from personnel to strategic partner
• Overview of HR functions: recruitment, training, compensation, employee relations
• South African labour legislation: Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Labour Relations Act
• Ethical considerations in HR practices
• Case study: HR's role in a small business

Day 2: Recruitment and Selection

Objectives:
• Describe the recruitment and selection process
• Draft a job description and person specification
• Identify appropriate recruitment sources and methods
• Apply basic interviewing techniques
• Understand legal requirements in hiring

• Job analysis and writing job descriptions
• Person specifications: knowledge, skills, attitudes
• Internal vs external recruitment methods
• Screening applications and shortlisting
• Interviewing techniques: structured, behavioural, panel
• Selection tests and assessment centres
• Employment equity and affirmative action
• Making the job offer and induction planning

Day 3: Employee Training and Development

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of training and development
• Conduct a basic training needs analysis
• Plan and implement a training programme
• Evaluate training effectiveness
• Understand skills development legislation (SETA, Skills Levy)

• Training vs development: definitions and benefits
• Training needs analysis at organisational, task, and individual levels
• Learning styles and adult learning principles
• Designing training objectives and content
• Training methods: on-the-job, off-the-job, e-learning
• Evaluating training: Kirkpatrick's four levels
• Skills Development Act and the role of SETAs
• Creating a personal development plan

Day 4: Performance Management and Employee Relations

Objectives:
• Define performance management and its cycle
• Set SMART performance objectives
• Conduct a performance appraisal discussion
• Handle employee grievances and discipline
• Promote a positive employee relations climate

Topics:
• Performance management vs performance appraisal
• Setting goals and expectations using SMART criteria
• Performance appraisal methods: rating scales, 360-degree feedback
• Conducting effective feedback sessions
• Managing underperformance: coaching and corrective action
• Grievance procedures and handling complaints
• Disciplinary procedures: code of conduct, warnings, dismissal
• Employee wellness and work-life balance

Day 5: Compensation, Benefits, and HR Strategy Integration

Objectives:
• Understand the components of a total reward system
• Explain basic payroll and benefits administration
• Link HR practices to business strategy
• Develop an HR action plan for a small business
• Comply with South African labour law requirements

Topics:
• Direct and indirect compensation: salary, bonuses, benefits
• Job evaluation and pay structures
• Statutory deductions: UIF, PAYE, SDL
• Leave administration: annual, sick, family responsibility
• Strategic HRM: aligning HR with business goals
• HR metrics and basic reporting
• Developing an HR policy manual
• Course wrap-up and action planning

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
