This course equips learners with the creative and technical skills to design and produce professional graphic solutions for television production. Participants will learn to conceptualise, create, and integrate motion graphics, titles, and visual elements that enhance broadcast quality and audience engagement.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Television Graphic Design

Objectives:
• Understand the role and impact of graphics in television production
• Identify key technical specifications and broadcast standards for TV graphics
• Differentiate between various graphic formats used in television
• Apply basic design principles to television-specific contexts

Topics:
• Introduction to television production workflows and the graphic designer's role
• Broadcast standards: aspect ratios, safe zones, colour spaces (PAL, NTSC, Rec. 709)
• Overview of graphic formats: lower thirds, full-screen graphics, bugs, transitions, motion graphics
• Core design principles (contrast, alignment, hierarchy) applied to television
• Introduction to industry-standard software (Adobe Creative Suite, broadcast-specific tools)
• Legal and compliance considerations: copyright, SABC/ICASA regulations

Day 2: Design for Visual Storytelling and Branding

Objectives:
• Develop graphics that support narrative and enhance storytelling
• Create and apply consistent visual branding across television content
• Design effective on-screen text and typography for readability and impact
• Utilise colour theory and psychology in television contexts

Topics:
• The psychology of visual storytelling in television
• Creating and maintaining brand identity packages (logos, colour palettes, typography)
• Typography for television: legibility, font selection, and kinetic typography basics
• Colour theory for broadcast: emotional impact, accessibility, and technical limitations
• Designing lower thirds, title sequences, and end credits
• Case studies: analysing effective branding in South African television

Day 3: Motion Graphics and Animation Principles

Objectives:
• Apply the 12 principles of animation to television graphics
• Create basic motion graphics sequences for broadcast
• Integrate graphics with live action and studio elements
• Understand timing, pacing, and rhythm in motion design

Topics:
• Introduction to the 12 principles of animation (squash & stretch, anticipation, etc.)
• Keyframing and animation techniques in software (After Effects/ similar)
• Creating animated transitions, intros, and outros
• Integrating graphics with green screen/chroma key and live footage
• Sound design and synchronisation with motion graphics
• Practical workshop: animating a lower third and simple logo sting

Day 4: Advanced Technical Integration and Workflow

Objectives:
• Integrate graphic designs seamlessly into live and post-production environments
• Prepare and deliver graphics in correct technical formats for broadcast
• Collaborate effectively with directors, producers, and technical crews
• Troubleshoot common technical issues in television graphics delivery

Topics:
• Graphics playout systems and live broadcast integration (e.g., Vizrt, CasparCG)
• File formats, codecs, and delivery specifications for television
• Collaborative workflows: working with editors, vision mixers, and studio crews
• Real-time graphics for news, sports, and live events
• Quality control and pre-flight checks for broadcast
• Simulated scenario: preparing a graphics package for a live news bulletin

Day 5: Creative Solutions and Portfolio Development

Objectives:
• Develop innovative graphic solutions for complex television briefs
• Critique and refine graphic designs based on creative and technical feedback
• Compile a professional portfolio of television graphics work
• Plan for continuous professional development in the industry

Topics:
• Creative problem-solving: addressing challenging briefs (tight deadlines, technical constraints)
• Peer and facilitator critique sessions on practical work
• Portfolio development: selecting, presenting, and documenting work for clients/employers
• The business of television graphics: freelancing, tenders, and industry networking in SA
• Emerging trends: virtual production, augmented reality graphics, and AI tools
• Final integrated project: designing a complete graphics package for a sample television programme

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
