Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Creative Packaging Design and the Design Process

Day 2: Consumer Psychology and Market Research for Packaging

• Analyse consumer behaviour and its influence on packaging choices.
• Conduct basic market research to inform design decisions.
• Apply psychological principles to enhance shelf appeal.
• Identify target audience preferences and trends.

• Consumer psychology: perception, emotion, and purchase decisions.

• Shelf impact: visual hierarchy and attention grabbers.

Day 3: Structural Design and Material Selection

• Select appropriate materials based on product needs and sustainability.
• Create basic structural prototypes.
• Evaluate cost and production constraints.

• Material properties: paperboard, plastic, glass, metal, biodegradable options.

Day 4: Graphic Design and Visual Communication for Packaging

• Create cohesive visual systems for product lines.
• Incorporate barcodes, nutritional info, and legal copy seamlessly.

Day 5: Digital Tools and Software for Packaging Design

Objectives:
• Use industry-standard software to create packaging designs.
• Develop digital mock-ups and dielines.
• Prepare files for print production.
• Understand colour management and pre-press requirements.

Topics:
• Overview of software: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D rendering tools.
• Creating dielines and templates.
• Digital mock-up techniques for client presentations.
• Colour spaces: CMYK, Pantone, and spot colours.
• Pre-press checklist: bleeds, margins, resolution, and file formats.
• Practical lab: create a digital packaging design from concept to print-ready file.

Day 6: Prototyping, Testing, and Iteration

Objectives:
• Build physical prototypes to test design functionality.
• Conduct user testing and gather feedback.
• Iterate designs based on test results.
• Evaluate packaging performance in real-world conditions.

• Prototyping materials and methods: paper, foam, 3D printing.
• Testing criteria: durability, usability, and shelf appeal.
• User testing: setting up sessions and recording feedback.
• Iterative design: refining based on insights.
• Quality assurance: checking for errors and consistency.

Day 7: Final Project Presentation and Industry Integration

• Present a complete packaging design solution professionally.
• Justify design decisions with research and testing evidence.
• Understand the role of packaging in the supply chain.
• Explore career pathways and continuous learning opportunities.

• Final project: complete a packaging design from brief to prototype.
• Presentation skills: pitching to stakeholders.
• Supply chain considerations: logistics, storage, and retail.
• Industry trends: smart packaging, AR, and personalisation.
• Certification and portfolio development.
• Course wrap-up and feedback session.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
