Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of web design and graphic design software is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Web Art Direction

Objectives:
• Define the role and responsibilities of a web art director
• Understand the core principles of visual design for the web
• Identify key elements of user-centered design
• Explore the relationship between art direction and user experience (UX)
• Establish a framework for creative problem-solving in web projects

• Core visual design principles: hierarchy, balance, contrast, alignment
• User-centered design (UCD) methodology and user personas
• The art director's role within a web development team
• Overview of the creative web design process
• Introduction to SAQA Unit Standard 117688 and course outcomes

Day 2: Conceptual Development and Creative Strategy

Objectives:
• Develop creative concepts aligned with client briefs and brand identity
• Apply brainstorming and ideation techniques for web projects
• Create mood boards and visual references to communicate concepts
• Define a creative strategy for a web project
• Learn to pitch and justify creative concepts effectively

• Creative brainstorming techniques (e.g., mind mapping, SCAMPER)
• Developing a creative concept and unique selling proposition (USP)
• Creating mood boards, style tiles, and visual concept presentations

Day 3: Visual Design Systems and UI Fundamentals

• Design cohesive visual systems for websites and applications
• Apply colour theory, typography, and iconography effectively
• Create responsive grid systems and layout principles
• Develop UI components and design patterns
• Understand accessibility (WCAG) considerations in visual design

• Building a visual design system: colour palettes, typography scales
• Principles of responsive and adaptive design
• Grid systems, spacing, and layout composition
• Designing UI components: buttons, forms, navigation, cards
• Iconography and imagery selection and treatment
• Introduction to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
• Tools for UI design and prototyping (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD)

Day 4: Interactive Design and User Experience (UX) Integration

Objectives:
• Design intuitive and engaging interactive elements
• Apply UX principles to enhance usability and user flow
• Create wireframes and interactive prototypes
• Understand micro-interactions and their role in user engagement
• Integrate UX research findings into art direction decisions

• Low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframing

Day 5: Content Strategy and Visual Storytelling

• Develop a content strategy that supports visual design goals
• Apply visual storytelling techniques to enhance user engagement

• Understand the role of motion design and video in web art direction

Day 6: Technical Implementation and Collaboration

• Communicate effectively with developers and technical teams
• Understand technical constraints and opportunities in web development
• Create comprehensive design specifications and handoff documents
• Test and refine designs across different devices and browsers
• Implement quality assurance processes for visual design

Day 7: Advanced Solutions and Portfolio Development

Objectives:
• Synthesise all course concepts into a comprehensive web art direction solution
• Develop a professional portfolio piece demonstrating creative problem-solving
• Present and defend design decisions to stakeholders
• Create a personal development plan for ongoing skill enhancement
• Prepare for SAQA assessment requirements for Unit Standard 117688

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
