Day 1: Introduction to Graphic Design for Print Advertising

• Explore the print advertising landscape and target audience analysis.
• Familiarise with design briefs and project requirements.

• Overview of graphic design in advertising.
• Design principles: balance, contrast, hierarchy, alignment, repetition.
• Understanding target audiences and market segmentation.
• Analysing print advertising examples.
• Introduction to design briefs and specifications.

Day 2: Typography and Colour Theory in Print Advertising

Objectives:
• Apply typography effectively in print ads.
• Understand colour theory and its psychological impact.
• Select appropriate typefaces and colour schemes for campaigns.
• Create typographic hierarchy and colour palettes.

Topics:
• Typography fundamentals: typefaces, fonts, spacing.
• Readability and legibility in print.
• Colour theory: RGB vs CMYK, colour wheel, harmony.
• Psychological effects of colour in advertising.
• Creating colour palettes for brand consistency.

Day 3: Layout and Composition Techniques

Objectives:
• Design effective layouts using grid systems.
• Apply composition techniques to guide viewer attention.
• Integrate images, text, and white space harmoniously.
• Create mockups for print ads.

• Composition techniques: rule of thirds, Z-pattern, F-pattern.

Day 4: Software Tools and Digital Workflow

• Understand file formats, resolution, and colour modes.
• Manage layers, masks, and effects in design projects.
• Prepare files for print production.

• Introduction to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign.
• Vector vs raster graphics.
• Resolution, DPI, and colour settings for print.
• Working with layers, masks, and blending modes.
• Exporting files: PDF, EPS, TIFF.

Day 5: Branding and Corporate Identity in Print Ads

Objectives:
• Apply brand guidelines to print advertising design.
• Create cohesive visual identities across campaigns.
• Design advertisements that reinforce brand messaging.
• Develop a style guide for print materials.

• Understanding brand identity and guidelines.
• Logo placement and usage in ads.
• Consistency in typography, colour, and imagery.
• Designing for different print formats: flyers, posters, brochures.
• Creating a brand style guide.

Day 6: Advanced Techniques and Special Effects

Objectives:
• Utilise advanced design techniques for impactful ads.
• Incorporate special effects and finishes in print design.
• Understand print production processes and limitations.
• Optimise designs for different printing methods.

Topics:
• Advanced image manipulation and compositing.
• Using gradients, shadows, and textures.
• Special finishes: spot UV, embossing, foil stamping.
• Print production: offset, digital, large format.
• Preparing files with bleeds, crops, and safe zones.

Day 7: Final Project and Portfolio Review

Objectives:
• Complete a comprehensive print advertising campaign project.
• Apply all learned skills to a real-world brief.
• Present and critique design work professionally.
• Compile a portfolio of print advertising samples.

• Final project brief: design a multi-piece print campaign.
• Project development and instructor guidance.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
