Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Integrated Marketing Communication

Objectives:
• Define integrated marketing communication (IMC) and its strategic importance
• Identify the key components of the IMC mix (advertising, PR, sales promotion, direct marketing, digital, personal selling)
• Explain the role of brand positioning and target audience analysis in IMC planning
• Understand the legal and ethical frameworks governing IMC in South Africa

Topics:
• Introduction to IMC: evolution, definitions, and benefits
• The IMC planning process: situation analysis, objectives, strategies, tactics
• Brand communication models: AIDA, DAGMAR, and hierarchy-of-effects
• Target audience profiling and segmentation
• Regulatory environment: ASA Code of Practice, POPIA, and consumer protection
• Overview of traditional and digital media channels

Day 2: Audience Insights and Message Strategy

Objectives:
• Conduct audience research and develop consumer insights
• Craft compelling message strategies that resonate with target audiences
• Apply creative brief development techniques
• Evaluate different creative appeals and executional frameworks

Topics:
• Consumer behaviour theories relevant to IMC
• Qualitative and quantitative research methods for audience insights
• Developing a creative brief: key elements and best practices
• Message strategy: rational, emotional, and moral appeals
• Creative execution styles: humour, fear, sex, slice-of-life, testimonials
• Cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in South African messaging

Day 3: Media Planning and Channel Integration

Objectives:
• Develop a media plan that integrates multiple channels for synergy
• Select appropriate media vehicles based on reach, frequency, and cost
• Apply budgeting methods and media metrics (CPM, GRPs, ROI)
• Understand the role of digital and social media in an IMC campaign

Topics:
• Media planning process: situation analysis, objectives, strategy, tactics
• Traditional media: TV, radio, print, outdoor – advantages and limitations
• Digital media: search, display, social, email, mobile
• Media metrics and measurement: reach, frequency, impressions, click-through rates
• Budgeting for IMC: percentage-of-sales, competitive parity, objective-and-task
• Integrating owned, earned, and paid media

Day 4: Campaign Development and Creative Production

Objectives:
• Develop a comprehensive IMC campaign plan with aligned creative assets
• Produce sample creative outputs for at least two media channels
• Apply project management principles to campaign timelines and deliverables
• Evaluate the effectiveness of creative concepts through pre-testing

Topics:
• Structuring an IMC campaign plan: executive summary, research, objectives, strategies, tactics, budget, evaluation
• Creative development process: from concept to execution
• Copywriting and design principles for ads, social posts, and collateral
• Pre-testing methods: focus groups, surveys, A/B testing
• Campaign project management: timelines, milestones, team roles
• Case study: successful South African IMC campaigns

Day 5: Presentation, Evaluation, and Final Integration

Objectives:
• Present a complete IMC campaign proposal professionally
• Use evaluation frameworks to measure campaign effectiveness
• Synthesise all learning into a coherent, integrated marketing communication strategy
• Receive constructive feedback and refine the campaign plan

Topics:
• Presentation skills for pitching IMC campaigns
• Evaluation metrics: ROMI, brand awareness, customer acquisition cost, sentiment analysis
• Post-campaign analysis and continuous improvement
• Group presentations of IMC campaign proposals
• Peer and facilitator feedback sessions
• Course wrap-up: key takeaways and application in the workplace

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
