Day 1: Introduction to Motion Graphics and Video Production

Day 2: Principles of Design and Composition

Objectives:
• Apply design principles to motion graphics.
• Understand colour theory and its psychological impact.
• Use typography effectively in motion.
• Create balanced compositions for screen.
• Analyse examples of effective motion design.

• Elements of design: line, shape, space, texture, colour.
• Principles: balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, rhythm, unity.
• Colour theory: RGB vs CMYK, colour harmonies, mood.
• Typography: font selection, hierarchy, readability in motion.
• Composition rules: rule of thirds, golden ratio, framing.
• Case study: breaking down a motion graphic sequence.
• Practical exercise: design a static storyboard frame.

Day 3: Storyboarding and Scriptwriting

Objectives:
• Develop a creative brief from a client scenario.
• Write a script for a 30-second motion graphic.
• Create a storyboard with key frames and transitions.
• Annotate storyboards with timing and technical notes.
• Present and critique storyboards in groups.

Day 4: Camera Fundamentals and Video Capture

Objectives:
• Explain camera settings: aperture, shutter speed, ISO.
• Apply composition techniques for video.
• Use lighting setups for different moods.
• Record high-quality video and audio.
• Manage file formats and storage.

• Camera types: DSLR, mirrorless, cinema cameras.
• Exposure triangle: aperture, shutter speed, ISO.
• Frame rates and resolution: 1080p, 4K, slow motion.
• Composition for video: headroom, lead room, rule of thirds.
• Lighting: three-point lighting, natural light, colour temperature.
• Audio capture: internal vs external microphones, levels.

Day 5: Introduction to Adobe After Effects

• Navigate the After Effects interface.
• Create compositions and import assets.
• Animate basic properties: position, scale, rotation, opacity.
• Use keyframes and adjust timing.
• Apply presets and simple effects.

• Interface overview: project panel, composition panel, timeline.
• Creating compositions: settings, duration, background.
• Importing assets: images, videos, audio, vector files.
• Layer types: text, solid, shape, adjustment layers.
• Keyframe animation: linear vs easing.

Day 6: Advanced Animation Techniques

Objectives:
• Use masks and track mattes for compositing.
• Apply parenting and expressions for complex motion.
• Create 3D layers and cameras.
• Animate text with text animators.
• Design shape layers and trim paths.

• Masking: shapes, paths, feathering.
• Track mattes: alpha, luma, invert options.
• Parenting: linking layers, null objects.
• Expressions basics: wiggle, time, loopOut.
• 3D layers: position, rotation, lights, cameras.
• Text animators: range selectors, properties.
• Shape layers: creating, merging, trim paths.

Day 7: Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro

• Navigate the Premiere Pro interface.
• Organise media with bins and metadata.
• Perform cuts, trims, and transitions.

Day 8: Audio Production and Sound Design

• Record and edit voiceovers.
• Apply audio effects: EQ, compression, reverb.
• Sync audio with video.
• Create soundscapes and Foley.
• Mix and export audio properly.

• Audio recording: microphone types, positioning, room treatment.
• Voiceover editing: noise reduction, punch and roll.
• Audio effects: parametric EQ, compressor, limiter.
• Syncing: waveform alignment, plural eyes.
• Sound design: Foley, ambient sounds, spot effects.
• Music: royalty-free sources, editing to picture.
• Mixing: levels, panning, stereo vs surround.

Day 9: Compositing and Visual Effects

Day 10: Motion Graphics for Social Media and Web

Objectives:
• Design motion graphics for different platforms.
• Optimise export settings for web and mobile.
• Create animated social media ads.
• Use templates and expressions for efficiency.
• Understand accessibility guidelines.

• Platform specifications: Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, web.
• Aspect ratios: square, vertical, landscape.
• Export settings: H.264, MP4, frame rate, bitrate.
• Rendering with Media Encoder.
• Looping animations for GIFs and cinemagraphs.
• Accessibility: captions, contrast, audio descriptions.
• Practical: create an animated Instagram story ad.
• Template creation for repeatability.

Day 11: Project Management and Client Workflows

Objectives:
• Manage a production project from brief to delivery.
• Communicate with clients and stakeholders.
• Use project management tools.
• Create a portfolio piece with real-world constraints.
• Present work professionally.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
