Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Packaging Design

Objectives:
• Define packaging design and its role in the value chain.
• Identify key SAQA-aligned principles and industry standards.
• Analyse the relationship between packaging, product, and consumer.
• Recognise the legal and regulatory framework for packaging in South Africa.

Topics:
• Introduction to packaging design: definitions and scope.
• Core principles: protection, containment, communication, and convenience.
• The packaging lifecycle and sustainability considerations.
• South African regulatory environment (e.g., NRCS, labelling laws).
• Understanding the target market and user needs.
• Materials overview: paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

Day 2: Structural Design and Material Science

Objectives:
• Evaluate different packaging materials for specific applications.
• Apply structural design principles to create functional packaging.
• Understand manufacturing processes and their design implications.
• Assess the environmental impact of material and design choices.

Topics:
• Material properties: strength, barrier properties, printability.
• Structural design fundamentals: shapes, closures, and ergonomics.
• Manufacturing processes: moulding, forming, and assembly.
• Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA).
• Sustainable materials and design for recyclability/reusability.
• Testing protocols for structural integrity and performance.

Day 3: Graphic Design and Brand Communication

Objectives:
• Develop graphic elements that align with brand identity.
• Apply principles of typography, colour theory, and layout to packaging.
• Create packaging that communicates effectively at the point of sale.
• Integrate mandatory and marketing information clearly.

Topics:
• Brand identity and packaging as a touchpoint.
• Graphic design fundamentals: hierarchy, balance, and contrast.
• Colour psychology and cultural considerations in the SA context.
• Typography for legibility and brand voice.
• Label and dieline creation.
• Point-of-sale impact and shelf standout.

Day 4: Advanced Applications and Innovation

Objectives:
• Explore innovative and smart packaging technologies.
• Design packaging for specialised sectors (e.g., food, pharmaceuticals).
• Apply user-centred design principles to enhance functionality.
• Critique packaging designs against sustainability and ethical criteria.

Topics:
• Smart and active packaging (e.g., QR codes, freshness indicators).
• Sector-specific requirements: food safety, pharmaceutical compliance.
• User experience (UX) in packaging: accessibility and usability.
• Ethical design and reducing environmental footprint.
• Case studies of innovative South African packaging solutions.
• Costing and feasibility analysis for design concepts.

Day 5: Integration, Presentation, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Synthesise structural, graphic, and material knowledge into a cohesive design.
• Develop and present a professional packaging design proposal.
• Apply critical evaluation skills to peer and industry designs.
• Formulate a personal action plan for applying learned principles.

Topics:
• The end-to-end packaging design process.
• Creating a comprehensive design brief and specification.
• Prototyping techniques and presentation skills.
• Peer review and critique workshop.
• Portfolio development for SAQA alignment.
• Course recap, assessment, and action planning.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
