Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Internal Control

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of internal control frameworks.
• Identify key components of the COSO internal control framework.
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of management and auditors.
• Recognise the impact of internal controls on organisational objectives.

• Introduction to internal control: definitions and objectives.
• Overview of the COSO internal control framework.
• Control environment: tone at the top and ethical values.
• Risk assessment: identifying and analysing risks.
• Control activities: policies and procedures.
• Information and communication: flow of information.
• Monitoring activities: ongoing and separate evaluations.
• Case study: applying COSO components to a local business.

Day 2: Designing Effective Internal Controls

Objectives:
• Apply risk assessment techniques to identify control gaps.
• Design control activities for key business processes.
• Integrate control design with organisational structure.
• Document control designs using flowcharts and narratives.

Topics:
• Risk assessment methods: qualitative and quantitative.
• Control design principles: preventive, detective, corrective.
• Designing controls for revenue, expenditure, and inventory cycles.
• Segregation of duties and authorisation controls.
• IT controls: general and application controls.
• Documentation techniques: flowcharts, matrices, and narratives.
• Workshop: design controls for a given business scenario.
• Review and critique control designs.

Day 3: Evaluating Internal Control Effectiveness

Objectives:
• Develop evaluation criteria for control effectiveness.
• Perform walkthroughs and testing of controls.
• Identify control deficiencies and classify their severity.
• Communicate evaluation findings effectively.

• Control evaluation frameworks: COSO and King IV.
• Walkthrough procedures: tracing transactions.
• Testing controls: inquiry, observation, inspection, reperformance.
• Sampling techniques for control testing.
• Identifying deficiencies: design vs. operating effectiveness.
• Severity classification: material weaknesses, significant deficiencies.
• Reporting evaluation results: management letters and reports.
• Practical exercise: evaluate controls in a simulated environment.

Day 4: Advanced Topics in Internal Control

Objectives:
• Analyse the impact of fraud on internal controls.
• Evaluate controls in complex IT environments.
• Understand regulatory requirements (e.g., King IV, Companies Act).
• Apply risk-based auditing principles to control evaluation.

Topics:
• Fraud risk management: fraud triangle and red flags.
• Anti-fraud controls: prevention and detection.
• IT controls: cybersecurity, data integrity, and access controls.
• Cloud computing and third-party risks.
• Regulatory landscape: King IV, Companies Act, and PFMA.
• Risk-based audit planning and control testing.
• Continuous monitoring and automated controls.
• Case study: evaluating controls in a digital transformation context.

Day 5: Integration and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Synthesise knowledge to design a comprehensive control framework.
• Present control recommendations to stakeholders.
• Develop an action plan for control improvements.
• Assess the maturity of an organisation's control environment.

• Control framework design project: scope and objectives.
• Group work: design a control framework for a case organisation.
• Presentation of designs with justification.
• Peer review and feedback sessions.
• Control maturity models: Capability Maturity Model (CMM).
• Action planning: prioritising remediation efforts.
• Course wrap-up and assessment.
• Q&A and certification guidance.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
