This course equips learners with the skills to produce designs that meet specified requirements and standards. Participants will learn to interpret design briefs, apply design principles, and create outputs that satisfy client or organisational specifications. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Design Specifications and Standards

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of design specifications
• Identify key elements of a design brief
• Recognise relevant SAQA and industry standards
• Differentiate between specifications, standards, and codes of practice

• Overview of design specification documents
• Components of a design brief (scope, constraints, deliverables)
• Introduction to SAQA unit standards and NQF levels
• Industry-specific standards (e.g., SABS, ISO)
• Reading and interpreting specification sheets
• Common terminology in design specifications

Day 2: Research and Analysis for Design

Objectives:
• Conduct research to inform design decisions
• Analyse user requirements and constraints
• Evaluate existing designs and benchmarks
• Apply ergonomic and human factors principles

Topics:
• Research methods for design (surveys, interviews, observation)
• Understanding target audience and user needs
• Benchmarking against competitors and best practices
• Ergonomic considerations in design
• Legal and regulatory constraints
• Environmental and sustainability factors

Day 3: Conceptual Design and Ideation

Objectives:
• Generate multiple design concepts
• Apply creative thinking techniques
• Select viable concepts based on specifications
• Document and present initial ideas

• Sketching and rough prototyping
• Concept selection matrices
• Design for manufacturing and assembly principles
• Documentation of concepts (sketches, notes)

Day 4: Technical Drawing and CAD Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Interpret technical drawings and symbols
• Create basic 2D drawings using CAD software
• Apply dimensioning and tolerancing standards
• Understand orthographic and isometric projections

• Reading engineering drawings (views, sections, details)
• Introduction to CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks)
• Creating 2D sketches and geometric constraints
• Dimensioning and tolerancing (including GD&T basics)
• Orthographic projection principles
• Isometric and perspective views

Day 5: Material Selection and Specification

Objectives:
• Identify material properties relevant to design
• Select appropriate materials based on specifications
• Understand material testing and certification
• Apply sustainability and cost considerations

• Material categories (metals, polymers, ceramics, composites)
• Mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties
• Material selection criteria (strength, weight, cost)
• Material testing standards (tensile, hardness, impact)
• Sustainability and life cycle assessment
• Material specification sheets and datasheets

Day 6: Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)

Objectives:
• Apply DFMA principles to reduce costs and improve quality
• Design parts that are easy to manufacture and assemble
• Evaluate design alternatives for production efficiency
• Understand process capabilities and limitations

Topics:
• DFMA guidelines for machining, casting, molding
• Design for assembly (reducing part count, fasteners)
• Process selection (injection molding, CNC, 3D printing)
• Tolerances and fit types
• Quality control and inspection methods
• Case studies of DFMA improvements

Day 7: Prototyping and Testing

Objectives:
• Develop prototypes using various methods
• Plan and conduct tests against specifications
• Analyse test results and iterate design
• Document prototype iterations and findings

• Prototyping techniques (3D printing, CNC, hand-built)
• Rapid prototyping vs. functional prototypes
• Test planning (test cases, success criteria)
• Mechanical, thermal, and performance testing

Day 8: Design Documentation and Specifications Writing

Objectives:
• Write clear and complete design specifications
• Create technical reports and design files
• Apply document control and versioning
• Ensure compliance with standards and regulations

• Structure of a design specification document
• Writing technical descriptions and requirements
• Creating bill of materials (BOM) and parts lists
• Document control procedures (revision history)
• Compliance matrices and checklists
• Software tools for documentation (e.g., MS Word, LaTeX)

Day 9: Quality Assurance and Compliance

Objectives:
• Understand quality management systems (ISO 9001)
• Apply inspection and testing procedures
• Identify non-conformances and corrective actions
• Ensure design meets regulatory requirements

• Quality assurance vs. quality control
• Inspection plans and sampling methods
• Non-conformance reporting and root cause analysis
• Corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)

Day 10: Project Management for Design

Objectives:
• Plan and schedule design projects
• Manage resources, time, and budget
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders

• Stakeholder communication and reporting

Day 11: Final Project and Assessment

• Complete a summative assessment
• Reflect on learning and areas for improvement

Practicals

30 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals component provides hands-on experience in applying design principles to real-world problems. Learners will use CAD software, build prototypes, and test designs against specifications, reinforcing theoretical knowledge through supervised practice.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: CAD Modelling and Technical Drawing — Learners create 2D and 3D CAD models of a simple mechanical part, including dimensioning and tolerancing, then produce a technical drawing package. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Prototype Fabrication and Testing — Learners fabricate a prototype using additive manufacturing (3D printing) or hand tools, then conduct functional tests and document results. (10h)
  • Practical 3: Design Specification and Quality Inspection — Learners write a design specification for a given product, then inspect a manufactured part against that specification using measurement tools. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Final Design Project - Integrated Application — Learners work in teams to complete a mini design project from brief to prototype, including concept selection, CAD, fabrication, and presentation. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
