Spatial Design Research Techniques Application Methods Training

SAQA US 117521 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips participants with advanced techniques for applying spatial design research methods in real-world contexts. Learners will develop the ability to systematically investigate spatial problems, analyze user needs, and implement evidence-based design solutions that enhance functionality and aesthetic quality.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply spatial design research methods to identify and define design problems.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data to inform spatial design decisions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of different research techniques for specific design contexts.
  • Design a research framework that integrates user-centered and evidence-based approaches.
  • Implement research findings to develop innovative spatial design solutions.
  • Demonstrate ethical considerations and cultural sensitivity in spatial design research.

Target Audience

This course is designed for interior designers, architects, urban planners, and spatial design professionals seeking to deepen their research methodology skills. It is also suitable for project managers and consultants involved in built environment projects.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Spatial Design Research

Objectives:
• Define spatial design research and its role in the built environment.
• Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative research methods.
• Identify ethical considerations in spatial research.
• Develop a basic research question for a spatial design project.

Topics:
• Introduction to spatial design research: scope and relevance.
• Overview of research methodologies: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.
• Ethical principles: informed consent, confidentiality, and cultural sensitivity.
• Formulating research questions and hypotheses.
• Literature review techniques for spatial design.
• Data collection methods: surveys, observations, and interviews.
• Introduction to spatial analysis tools (e.g., GIS basics).

Day 2: Applied Research Techniques and Data Collection

Objectives:
• Apply qualitative techniques such as ethnographic observation and photo-elicitation.
• Conduct quantitative spatial analysis using GIS and mapping.
• Integrate community engagement methods into research.
• Collect and manage spatial data effectively.

Topics:
• Qualitative methods: ethnographic observation, photo-elicitation, and participatory mapping.
• Quantitative methods: GIS spatial analysis, heat mapping, and statistical analysis.
• Sampling strategies for spatial research.
• Community engagement: stakeholder workshops and co-design sessions.
• Data management: coding, storage, and documentation.
• Hands-on exercise: conducting a site observation and mapping exercise.
• Introduction to data triangulation for validity.

Day 3: Synthesis, Analysis, and Reporting of Spatial Research

Objectives:
• Synthesize qualitative and quantitative data into actionable insights.
• Use thematic analysis and spatial statistics to interpret findings.
• Present research outcomes in a professional report.
• Critically evaluate research methods for future application.

Topics:
• Thematic analysis of qualitative data.
• Spatial statistics: pattern analysis and correlation.
• Integrating findings: mixed-methods synthesis.
• Visualizing data: maps, diagrams, and infographics.
• Writing a spatial research report: structure and style.
• Presenting findings to stakeholders.
• Reflective practice: evaluating research methods and outcomes.
• Final assessment: group presentation of a mini research project.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
